Psalms 23:1
Reports are the Coyotes and Senators have had introductory trade discussions on a possible swap which would put goalie Martin Gerber in the desert.
The word is that Phoenix is offering Derek Morris and his 3.9 million dollar contract to the Senators in order to make the deal work.
The 32 year old Gerber (who will turn 33 by the start of the season) signed a 3 year, 11.1 million dollar contract last July, however struggled and was benched for Ray Emery, who subsequently lead the Senators to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in franchise history.
Gerber was drafted by Anaheim in the 8th round of the 2001 draft. He's been on three Stanley Cup teams in his brief career.
Not really sure what to think about Gerber.
One, in 2005 he did play VERY well in the regular season and was one of the key reasons Carolina made the playoffs. Also, despite his age, he's still young in NHL years and has a little more gas in the tank than most 33 year old goaltenders. Also, in worst case scenarios, look at it this way. Each of the last two teams who benched him wound up going to the Stanley Cup. Also, even though he was benched, he did look fairly decent when he started, going 15-9-3 with a 2.78 goals against average. One NHL executive summed things up for him pretty well in a Slam! article. " "My belief is Martin Gerber is a good goalie, he just probably made a mistake signing with the Senators," said the executive. "What he had a tough time with was the pressure in Ottawa. That's not an easy place to play. It's a hockey market. The best bet for him might to be to go to a place like Phoenix where there's not a whole lot of focus on the team and all he has to do is worry about stopping the puck. I believe he lost his job in Ottawa because the pressure simply became too much."
On the flipside of this, his contract's pretty rough and I do think they can do better.
Thoughts?
