Alexander Zverev is one victory away from his first title of the year after he beat Fabian Marsozan 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the semi-finals of the BMW Open on Saturday.
Top seed Zverev won in front of a German home crowd in 1 hour 32 minutes on the Munich centre court.
In the final on his 28th birthday Sunday, Zverev faces second-seeded American Ben Shelton, who rallied to beat Fransico Cerundolo 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.
Zverev missed a maiden grand slam title again when he lost the Australian Open final against Jannik Sinner in January, and then failed to get beyond the quarter-finals in the next six events until the week in Munich where he had lifted the trophy in 2017 and 2018.
Hungary's Maroszan was able to take the first set into a tie break but Zverev prevailed in the decisive game, and then paved the way to victory with a break in the eighth game.
"I thought I played quite a good match today. I lost focus once in the first set on my serve, but apart from that I thought it was a good match. I thought Fabian played extremely well and I’m just happy to be in the final," Zverev said.
Looking ahead at the final coinciding with his birthday, he added: "I am much rather in the final than having the day off on my birthday.
And on a lighter note: "Tomorrow could be a super day but it could also be a crappy day."
Shelton prevailed after 2 hours 7 minutes in a hard-fought contest over 22nd ranked Cerundolo from Argentina.
Cerundolo raced through the first set but Shelton raised his game and tied the sets on his fourth attempt in a dramatic tie-break. The players traded breaks early in the decider before Shelton eventually triumphed by breaking Cerundolo for the match.
"It’s a big win for me. To get a win on clay against a guy like that gives me a lot of confidence. I am really happy. I’ve been playing well here, I love the energy here in Munich and I’m going to go for that title tomorrow,” Shelton said.
