If you want to be a power running team, I think Benson works. He has a lot to learn about setting up LBs and when to cutback or bounce it, but he goes hard man. One cut and go. I said it in another thread but I would have no issue with a Conner/Benson combo over the next three years.

The nice thing about that combo, is that a Conner ages and potentially slows, you can just flip flop them as RB1 and RB2 and lose nothing.

Ya that would be awesome… but I’d anticipate a sharp decline in Conner within at the very latest after this season

Who knows...maybe Conner is still good for longer than that.

Guys who don't rely on speed as their only attribute tend to last longer in the NFL.

Ya he’s no Adrian Peterson as much as I love him.. slow backs get slower.
I’ll never understand the concept that a slower guy is going to be effective longer into their later years. If we work under the premise that everyone is going to slow similarly (there’s no scientific evidence that faster guys slow more quickly or exponentially more than slower guys) that means that a fast guy becomes an average guy, an average guy becomes a slow guy, and a slow guy becomes a no longer in the nfl guy. The slower guy has less speed to lose. Yes, their vision may help, but when they lose speed the vision becomes almost meaningless because they can no longer act on what they see fast enough to take advantage of it. If it’s purely power they depend upon they might crack out a season as a short yardage back, but they can’t be relied upon for anything more than that.

I think Conner has lost some of his early career speed. He was never a speed guy, but he's pretty darn slow now.

I'll just Jerry Rice as an example. He hit multiple loss of speed plateaus, and by the end, he was too slow to be a viable NFL player. The Raiders Jerry Rice had already lost speed, but his game was never really a speed game.

The same comp can be made with Fitz. When Arians came in, he made Fitz a big slot because he wasn't fully a viable outside receiver. But at the end of his career Fitz hit another speed decline and was no longer viable at all.

Obviously this is all observational, but there are a number of examples of guys who lasted because speed wasn't their number one attribute.

But it’s all relative. Conners started from a lower speed position (since joining the cardinals) than did rice and Fitz. He’s already at his second stage. If he falls to a third stage I think he’s too slow for the nfl in anything other than a short yardage specialist.

I think he might have two years left. By that point he's probably on year to year contracts.

Ok Conner slow, Conner old. That may be true. But how many of you would say that to his face ;) Dudes a beast!

The new RB looks like a great addition and some much needed speed.

Speed was never Connors game and it's never been a big part of what he does. So losing a bit won't make much difference.

Frank Gore was a 4.58 guy at the combine and was getting 1000 yards until 33/34.

Plenty of life in Connor yet but I wouldn't be surprised if at the end of his deal next year Benson becomes the lead back and Connor becomes the #2.

I think we can all agree that benson was drafted as a hopeful Connor replacement. The first step will be a running back by committee. You will hear verbiage like “goal is keep Connor fresh” but know that the transition is happening

Maybe DeHilg, but they say power/strength is the last thing to go, and Conner has good vision, which a RB never loses!

Re Trey Benson - you guys know more than I do about college players, but I have a gut feeling TB could finally be our proverbial great-RB-who-was-drafted-in-the-middle-rounds!

The truth is that we won't know how much losing a step will affect him until it happens.

His game may not be built around speed, but it is built around his speed. Frank Gore seems to be an outlier at this point, but shows that it could be possible.

I'm not quite this bullish, but the Cardinals did provide some level of assurance that if Conner does fall off, they have a credible roster solution already.

Imagine the scenario where Conner hits the wall and the Cardinals only had Carter (third down back), Demercado (replacement level player), and Deejay Dallas as ball carriers.

James Conner just turned 29 yesterday.
In the real world he's not old, but it's alarming how consistently RBs fall off a cliff at this age in the current NFL. Now, I'll admit that's from a fantasy football perspective, not necessarily factoring in things like pass protection or goal line situations.

tbh many RBS slowed down After 26
Talking about conner Speed Is not his strenght point
I think he can be reliable for a couple of seasons
He is a hard worker
we talking about someone Who had his best season at 28 1/2 years old
The RBS with more longevity normally doesnt rely their success on their speed
RBS tò extend their career needs tò work harder year by year especially when Age start to effect their performance and injuries are more frequent
Work ethic Is the main factor for RBS longevity
