Meh.

And super meh.

The trailer looked cool at the very outset, but it quickly got boring as hell, then ridiculous. No thanks.

You were surprised that cowboys fighting alien invaders got "ridiculous"? Were you expecting Schindler's List?

I had not heard ANYTHING about it, and saw the trailer...it looked really freaking promising, then Harrison Ford popped up, and Spielberg's name and I was thinking, Damn, this is going to be a badass film (I was thinking it was some time traveler to the west thing with his armband thing) and then all of the sudden it went flat out stupid. Way stupid.

And that's the trailer. I wasn't expecting anything, got teased with the thought this might be good, then slapped in the face with ridiculous crap on screen. I went from 0-60 in 4.3 seconds, then to full stop and reverse in 2.2.

After the trailer was done, the audience was laughing...nothing was funny in the trailer. They were laughing at the idiotic trailer they just saw. I remember thinking "sounds lame, I think I'll pass."

The people that don't like this should NEVER bitch about there not being anything original in Hollywood. Good god, a Western... with ALIENS! Talk about extreme.

I was laughing after the trailer also. But it was because it was BAD ASS!

Hasn't it been done before, though? The first one that comes to mind is Serenity, and I could swear even that wasn't original in that sense.

I think the movie looks completely awesome (and by that I mean totally friggin' sweet), but I think it'll suffer a little based on the name. They could have done way better than "cowboys vs aliens." The title IS lame (I think Big trouble in Little China also suffered lame-tittle syndrome).

Decent example, but not really the same. This movie is a Western with aliens. Serenity (and Firefly) was science-fiction with Western themes.

Gotta agree with you on that one. I totally equated it with Monsters vs. Aliens. Then again, the fact that the title is so lame may be some tongue-in-cheek humor (like Big Trouble in Little China's title). Or Sharktapus. Or Aliens vs. Predator. Or Freddy vs. Jason. If the title is the worst thing about the movie, I'd say it'll be a success. :D

I'm excited for this take on the genre because it is based on a graphic novel, but yeah - even this idea has been done before.

The fact that you went out of your way to find 4 obscure movies that nobody has ever heard of to prove a point that doesn't need to be proven is pretty lame. None of those movies have anyone the quality of the PAs on this newer movie. ;)

If you and you buddy Donald don't want to see it, fine, don't see it. But don't try so hard to prove yourself that you look foolish. Backlash Oblivion 2? Are you serious?

I'm surprised you and Donald like any movies at all--if those crappy movies are your idea of "done before". :D

The funny thing is I was way into it when I thought it was a guy who time traveled and landed in the West. THAT concept wasn't ridiculous to me I guess. I think I would have been interested even if it were the alien theme, but I didn't like the way it was executed in the trailer. It came off (to me) very campy without trying to..which is bad.

Rebecca looked at me after the trailer and said "Snakes on a Plane."

Cowboys & Aliens

Release Date: July 29, 2011
Studio: Universal Pictures
Director: Jon Favreau
Screenwriter: Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof, Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby
Genre: Action, Thriller
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for intense sequences of western and sci-fi action and violence, some partial nudity and a brief crude reference)
Website: CowboysandAliensmovie.com

Starring: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach, Paul Dano, Noah Ringer, Keith Carradine, Clancy Brown, Ana de la Reguera, Abigail Spencer

Plot Summary: Blockbuster filmmaker Jon Favreau directs Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford in an event film for summer 2011 that crosses the classic Western with the alien-invasion movie in a blazingly original way: "Cowboys & Aliens." Joined by an arsenal of top moviemakers—Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci—he brings an all-new action thriller that will take audiences into the Old West, where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror from beyond our world.

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don't welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It's a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he's been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents—townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

I didn't know Favreau was directing. I hope this is better than Iron Man 2.

I hope it's better than Iron Man. If it's merely better than Iron Man 2 it could still be a pretty lousy movie.
