Most of us, especially me, watch the draft and slot players we want by our perception of weakness or holes.

Then you hear “ best player available”. Then we get pissed. Why would we draft a TE? We got McBride. God, how many db’s do we need? A RB? Are we nuts.

MO has done a remarkable job. Another good draft next year and this team will be force for a long time.

Yup.
We are only a couple seasons away from bitching about being too cheap to keep our own players because the salary cap is a myth

I loved the McBride pick. He was absolutely the best available player at the time.

Keim did great on that pick.

I was referring to Tipp. The guy has been a beast.
This coaching staff certainly had a plan to Tipp the scales to their advantage.

From what I’m seeing opponents are working overtime to figure out how to counter what we can do on offense.

The blocking schemes are a work of art. Without Tipp who knows but he seems to be an important piece.

The really encouraging thing is the offense is doing it in different ways. Our play calling has been really really good.

my guess at the defensive draft philosophy:

Gannon being a DB coach by trade, I think the defensive philosophy is to get a deep group of DBs who can cover and force the QB to go through progressions / and run a scheme that limits big plays.

This means a rotational group of C+ to B front-5 players can get enough pressure over enough 3rd downs to limit offensive points.

This doesnt mean they dont want A+ level front 5 players, but it means its not a requirement for an adequate defense.

It also explains why in Monti's first two drafts, they have taken 6 DBs to 4 front 5 players -- even though Monti started with 2 vet DBs but nearly 0 starter level front 5 players.

I mean, he's playing a lot of snaps, so that's something at least.

The pick looks more reasonable considering the offensive scheme we run.
Reiman is a huge part of this offensive scheme. Just because the receptions are not there, doesn't mean that he not important and hence a good pick for the scheme

Mmmmm. It all comes down to what you are picking vs what else is on the board. If Tip ends up being better than available front 5 players drafted after him...the pick is fine. It does seem like the draft class left some things to be desired in terms of front 5 players. So far Tip has been able to get on the field which makes the pick ok. If he can't, it is bad. That's the nature of the draft. If Jones can't get on the field, it turns out to be a wasted pick. We will see.

One area I am inclined to credit Monti is that he seems to be able to players who are workers. That can be tough to tell from the outside, but that is the perception I get. Monti doesn't seem to miss on the person.

I mean, it depends. If he gets 23% of snaps in games we get behind and have to throw the ball, then his role in the scheme is less important. You don't really want to have your best players be able to be taken out of games because of the game script.

I have no problem with what Monte has done in the draft. I do have any issue with what they have done (or not done) in FA. The league calendar allows you to fill holes in FA and then draft BPA in the draft. I still can't understand how they did not address the pass rush in any major capacity before the season. If we would have had a decent pass rush, we very well may have 1-2 more wins right now. Not recognizing that is either an ego thing (smartest person in the room syndrome) or incompetency. My vote is for ego. To think BJ, Zaven or Gardeck were the answer was wishful thinking at best.

as it stands we only have five picks in the next draft - one in each of the first five rounds - i don't think money was the issue during free agency - me thinks monti wants them draft picks

Sorry, that doesn't make sense. If he doesn't fit a specific scenario defined by you, then he's a bad pick?

Wouldn't all the snaps in the others games then qualify him as a fantastic pick?

Based off my amazing analysis of the comparison between the Cardinals and the Lions rebuild I can accurately predict what will happen this season.

The Cardinals will start the first half of the season with several heart breaking losses.

Mid way through October during a post game press conference after another close loss, Coach Gannon will shed some tears for his team.

The Cardinals will get a tie mid way through the season.

The Cardinals will finish strong winning a total of 3 games.

They will be on Hard Knocks the next offseason and somehow Jared Goff will be on the team to star for the third time on the series.

Dang. I was so close to getting this right. Gannon you couldn't shed just one tear!!!!

All Monti has to do is move back a couple of spots in the draft and he will easily fill those missing picks.

Monti can go into the next draft with a focus on the DL. Outside of that there are not a tonne of obvious gaping holes.

Corners seem to be coming on well. Safety is set (assuming they extend Budda which seems inevitable), RB is set.

I'd like to draft a burner WR, but only as a role player so further back in the draft.

Beachum likely retires, so probably need a tackle to grow behind Williams and Jones.

Possibly need a linebacker to develop behind Kyzir, assuming they extend him.

But round 1 and 2 should be iDL and Edge. Even if we extend Browning and get Ojulari back we need to improve that room. Gardeck and Dimukeje may well not be resigned.

Moving back three spots to 23 would net you a lot more than a 6th and a 7th round pick.
idk man - idk how it is for monti -i imagine he has a lot more draft stamina than i do with him being an expert and all - but my draft ***** goes away once we get in the mid 20s

if someone slips and there's no other teams to worry about then sure - and of course

I don't see Monti drafting for need.
