For me, this was Monti's biggest miss.

We can debate whether or not keeping Allen was actually possible.

We can debate trading back from Will Anderson and getting Paris.

We can debate a number of other draft picks.

What is not debatable for me is having a glaring need at EDGE, multiple FA options, more than enough cap space, and ignoring it. If you gave me one question that Monti had to answer honestly, that would probably be it.
No question this was an inexcusable blunder.

If that’s the case it’s still a huge mistake. You can’t rely on an unproven 2nd year player. Who already had an injury history no less.
agreed, i wonder if he also relied heavily on darius Robinson as well.

You can’t say that because free agency happens before the draft he didn’t know he was gonna have Darius Robinson to possibly count on… Plus he’s not an OLB/edge

next year the clear expectations for JG and the team are to make the playoffs

Monti will be doing his coach and roster a serious disservice if his approach to improving pressure on the QB is via the draft only, and/or, counting on BJ Ojulari and/or a full year of Darius Robinson

he HAS to get a credible veteran pass rusher that can be expected to contribute from week 1. and i dont mean resigning Barron Browning (which i think he should)

It is inexcusable looking at it in hindsight. Who knew Houston would finally turn the corner with the 2nd drafted QB in the draft instead of the first? With a rookie head coach...

Just about everyone going into the season thought that the pick would be top 5. It was like Monti was on a nut flush draw, after already having top pair on an otherwise dry board. (excuse the poker reference)

It isn't like we also didn't have a need a tackle as well.

Do both DT and Edge in FA, at least one each.
I agree.
Take an OT who can also play guard in the first if the talent is there, move up a bit if needed.
Most OTs that can play G aren't usually drafted in the top half of the first round. Most are high prospect tackles. You can trade down from 16 to get one of those if necessary.

I think he is referencing my post about ignoring the top FA pass rushers last year.

You're off topic. I was responding to Monti refusing to sign an edge when good edge players were available last year.

Will Campbell | OT | LSU

This offense has multiple needs up front, so a versatile blocker with tons of upside would be an ideal fit. Enter Campbell, a young and somewhat raw prospect with plenty of starting experience at tackle, but also the skill set to slide inside and play guard if necessary. He could make an instant impact at either right tackle or along the interior before eventually replacing Trent Williams at left tackle.

I think there is a mixup in what I am trying to say. Campbell will most likely be gone before we draft at 16. They aren't drafting him that high because he can play G if needed. They would draft him that high because he is a good to elite tackle prospect...
