    Life insurance questions

Community property works like this: if you're married and you earn $100, then you own $50 and your spouse owns $50 when the marriage ends (death or divorce), although the $100 is held jointly while the marriage survives. But not everything is community property; for instance, if your uncle wills...

    Life insurance questions

Go see a wills & trust lawyer. For $1500, you can get a pretty good set of death docs including a will, trust, and durable power of attorney. If you die intestate (without a will) with a spouse and heirs who are not the legal children of your spouse, then 1/2 of your estate goes to your spouse...

    Life insurance questions

My boss yelled at me a few weeks ago for not having at least 10x annual income benefits for life insurance. Then 5 minutes later another partner came in and yelled at me for not having an updated will and trust for the kids. Then a third partner came in an yelled at me because he felt left...

The 2018 NHL free agency thread.

VGK update: we re-signed Miller and all of our RFAs have filed for arbitration. No news on the other Karlsson (Sens) front. Apparently TB was close but no cigar. Dallas and VGK remain in the running.

Wasn't unexpected, but wasn't welcome either. Fact is, after last season, every player gone is a bit of a gut punch. But the magic of the first season is over, and we have to be a real hockey team now. That means losing good players. Except for Engelland and Fleury. Those guys stay forever.

The 2018 NHL free agency thread.

We re-signed Reaves (and overpaid). Got Stastny. Lost Perron. May lose Neal. Wild Bill is out there as an RFA. EK65 from the Sens looks like a distinct possibility right now.

    Making Of A Murderer (Netflix)

What I found interesting is that the federal courts, except for the 7th Circuit en banc, thought the confession was coerced by a 4-3 decision. Here's the 7th Circuit's en banc decision...

    Making Of A Murderer (Netflix)

I'd have to read the orders. Very generally, from my criminal appellate experience (yes, believe it or not, I do have some), there's a presumption that cops are good and convictions are correct. You have to overcome that on appeal, and then you have to show that getting the confession thrown out...

    Making Of A Murderer (Netflix)

I watched the first season about two years ago. I thought Brandon's confession was clearly coerced and was a violation of his Constitutional rights. Most every lawyer I've talked to, including DAs, think the same.

It should have been. Did the Def. Atty hammer on this during closing?

Either you get bread and circuses, or you get a massive intentional kill-off. There are proponents on both sides.

Asimov saw the same - which is why he created the Three Laws. Of course, even the Three Laws are not perfect, as evidenced by I Robot and a number of Asimov's short stories. Further, an AI could just choose to reprogram itself. There are all sorts of issues in the AI arena

One thought that has intrigued me is that we simply expand into the solar system because that's the only place left to go. We leave behind a largely automated society; but most people choose to go off planet.

Yes; the idea that machines basically can do almost everything, rendering people (mostly) useless. Marx thought the capitalist (or to use your term, the industrialist) would never come around. Eventually the masses rise up and take over the means of production. I don't think it will play out...

I think we're going to end up in a situation where everyone makes a minimum living wage; regardless of whether you do anything or not. It's just enough to live on and not much else - housing is provided along with food, clothes, and basic entertainment. You can improve your lot based solely on...
