It's really a running joke between my wife and I. Often we'll see a crime story or an odd story and find out that it happened in Ohio...we both say, in stereo, "Figures."
Here are a few of the reasons for our disliking your state:
A) ASU Coach John Cooper (whom I met a few times after ASU games) beats Michigan in the Rose Bowl (87 - I was there) then soon after bolts to Ohio St. (where ironically, he had a difficult time beating...Michigan)
B) My ex-fiancee lives there, her family is from there and that is mostly why she broke things off (pressure from her family once she moved here, including a couple of family illnesses, accidents, etc - nothing devious). In hindsight - her leaving was one of the best things that ever happened to me, because I never would have met my wife if we'd have gone ahead with our plans back then...
C) 1997 Rose Bowl...nuff said.
D) One of my wife's best friends from high school moved there and they stayed in touch all the time with letters and eventually emails. My wife always regarded her as a close friend, until she came into town to visit and we had to cancel meeting her and her new husband for dinner...because my wife's grandma was recovering from knee surgery from the day before. Her friend (same name as my ex-fiancee, ironically) told her that she needed to re-prioritize her life if she couldn't spare an evening for a super-close friend. She knew the reason we had to cancel and was invited to come see us at my wife's grandma's but refused. Total ***** about the situation.
E) AzWins23...nuff said.
So, in reality, we don't really hate Ohio. I've been there twice and still know some nice people from there through my Mom who collects pottery (Shawnee pottery which originated in Zanesville, OH) and Longaberger baskets...
I was in Ohio in 1990 and 1991, visiting. Went everywhere from Piqua to Columbus to Zanesville. Was there when it was snowing and there when it was Indian Summer (humid)...
It was kind of funny on one trip. Turns out it was hunting season. Guys would just grab their guns and head out looking for something to shoot (this was in DeGraf, West of Bellefontaine, etc). No permits, etc because of the large number of animals. Very odd sight to see. Looked like the militia was there to take over.
