Make your guesses now.

The Padres are playing great right now at home so I think they'll win 4 of the next 5 and I'll give them 1 loss in each of the two road series.

That means Arizona has to go 7-3 down the stretch to tie for the division title.

The Padres have to go to Mil. to face the Brewers for their final series. The Brewers are in a dog fight, so I expect a split on that series. The Brewers should miss facing Peavy on that trip. As it stands now, Jake Peavy would have to come back on 3 days rest to pitch the final regular season game. That didn't work out so well last time.

I say we cannot lose more than 3 games to win the West. 6-4 may get us the WC.

Well it might take our $30M man picking his jock off the ground and start hitting the ball again: .154/.179/.192/.371 (lowest for the team over the stretch) in 28 PAs (most for the team over the stretch) the last 7 games.

I'm not too convinced that we can get it down with 7 wins. I think we need 8 wins. The team needs to play inspired and loose... those are the two words that I would use to describe Orlando Hudson.

What scares me is that the way the Phillies are playing, if the D'backs don't win at least seven we may not even get the wildcard.

The Rockies killed the Dodgers' season yesterday. Hopefully the boys in blue will be dejected coming into AZ. If we can take all 3, that will be huge!

If the Snakes win the rest of their series', thats 7 games, they'll finish with about 92 wins. Thats going to be a very tough, but possible task. If they finish w/ 92 wins, I think they'll win the division.

If we need to win seven games out of ten then you guys are assuming the Padres will win eight out of their last ten... that would be a tremendous last few games for them. While I think it could happen, I do not see it.

I think we can win six of the remaining games and still win the NL West. If we only win four then we still have a shot at the Wild Card. So the D'backs are in good position to make the playoffs.

D'Backs are 85-67
Padres are 83-67

If both teams win-out, they tie because the Padres have 2 more games to play than Arizona. They would both have a record of 95-67 in this case and the D'Backs hold the tie-breaker. It also means that they have two more opportunities to falter, since they no longer have any off-days. We have two extra wins in the bank. The Padres basically need to win on our off days to pull even.

The Padres really have to win 3 more games than us down the stretch: two to pull even (while we are idle) and 1 to jump ahead. That means with 3 series left, if the D-Backs take 2-of-3 from everyone, the Padres would have to sweep to win the division.

My head hurts, but it was worth it because the D'Backs definitely control their own destinies. Just keep winning series after series and we're going to the playoffs.

Thanks for that. I hadn't thought about it like that.

Are you sure that this "tiebreaker" means anything in baseball? I don't think so. This isn't a seeding thing like NBA or NHL. If they end up tied, it's a one game play-in at Chase field, I believe, due to previous coin flips.

Can anyone else confirm either way?

There isn't seeding per se, but the Diamondbacks do wind up the division champs should they end up tied at the end of the regular season with the Padres due to their head to head record.

The tiebreaker does come into play if both the D-backs and Padres are going to make the playoffs anyway. If the Dodgers, Phillies, etc all finish with worse records than AZ and SD, the D-backs are named division champs due to the tiebreaker, and the Pods go in as the wildcard.

If AZ and SD tie, the Mets win the East and the Phils have a better record than AZ/SD, the D-backs and Padres would have the one-game playoff and the loser would go home.

It looks like the Padres have it clicking right now. We need to sweep LA, stop the bleeding... I don't like the idea of the Padres winning the division in the last week. That sucks momentum out of the Playoffs.
