No, I am not overreacting to a preseason game. I understand that a lot of the players on the field were second- and third stringers. That said, they were playing against second- and third stringers as well and so the level of the players on the field were somewhat equal, so to speak. Those players are fighting for a job, and some of them literally need the salary to feed their family. Those guys aren’t taking these games lightly, and that is why I am going to tread my evaluation like any other game, obviously with a few differences.

1 – I don’t think the first drive was necessarily an indication on how Mike McCoy are going to call the offense in the regular season. Yes, David Johnson ran like pre-injury, and so it was natural to feed him on some carries, but another, I think, major reason was that it protected Sam Bradford. We all know his injury history, so to expose him to potential danger would at best be risky and at worst downright stupid.

2 – This is related to the topic above. Man, David Johnson looked good. Granted, the left side of the offensive line opened up huge holes for him, but he still got to run the ball through those holes. He looked explosive, he looked decisive, he looked as if he has great vision. The easiest way for Sam Bradford to play long into the season is by developing a great chemistry with David Johnson, the sooner the better if they haven’t done it properly already.

3 – Based on this game, I feel somewhat confident in Jamar Taylor starting opposite Patrick Peterson. I thought Taylor played well and made some nice plays on the ball.

4 – Did you see that Scooby Wright was playing with the first team? Yes, it was only because Josh Bynes were out, but I think it’s interesting that Wright are the main backup. Yes, I really want him to do good. No, I don’t have any feeling what so ever that he played at the University of Arizona. I am not American. I don’t root for any college team. I don’t care where players played their college ball.

5 – Speaking of which, it sucks with Jeremy Cash. It sucks, it sucks, it sucks. I thought he was playing really good in the second half, making a lot of plays. I would not mind having him on the final roster. I think Gerald Hodges is a good substitution pickup, and I am really looking forward to seeing him play on Friday. I just don’t think it means much for Scooby Wright, by the way, as Hodges was signed after Cash went down, and as I saw it Cash was not playing middle linebacker which Wright was.

6 – If Robert Nkemdiche doesn’t step up when the games matter, I would not be surprised if Olsen Pierre supplant him as a starting defensive tackle. That guy is good.

7 – Sure, Josh Rosen had a difficult game, but how in the World are any quarterback supposed to play well when nobody around him are helping him. I saw two big drops from Greg Little on perfectly thrown passes. I saw a lot (I don’t even know how many) very bad snaps from Daniel Munyer. I saw a completely inept running game. No, he didn’t elevate the offense by himself. He is a rookie playing in his first ever NFL game.

8 – I am now at the point where I simply feel bad for Brandon Williams. I would be surprised if he made the final roster, and if he stinks again on Friday I would only consider it a mild surprise if he is not let go before they are even selecting the final roster.

9 – I think Bene Benwikere will not only make the team but play a lot of snaps. I thought he played really well, including being to direct reason for the interception by A. J. Howard. The goal to a defense is to get in their nickel package as soon as possible. In a nickel package they are deploying five or even six defensive backs. I think Benwikere can be that fifth defensive back.

10 – Do you think the problems with the receivers will cause McCoy to use D. J. Foster more in the passing game? I thought he did that yesterday, and that it worked fine.

Gandhi, nice job. Two things. Agree about #6 (Olsen Pierre), and I'm still waiting to be impressed with Nkemdiche. As for Bene Benwikere making the team as the fifth CB, and assuming that Campbell will be the fourth, who will be the third? Thanks, again.

Good stuff, Gandhi. Totally agree with you on Rosen. You need to protect your qb of the future and they sure didn't with that offensive line and crappy center. Additionally how about getting a wr besides Fitz that can actually catch a football.

Brandon Williams missed a tackle when perfectly positioned, true, but he did make 4 solo tackles. I think his demise is greatly exaggerated.

He is about as bad as it gets. Even Wolfley was saying what a bad night for the kid. Not sure it could have been worse.

That missed tackle was egregious. Then tack on allowed receptions and two penalties and who cares about those 4 solo tackles. He flat out sucked and I’ve been one refraining from commenting on him because I’ve been hopeful the light would come on for him.

Olson Pierre played more snaps last season than 'Diche. Haven't seen much that would change that formulation this year.

I think our top 5 DBs are still Peterson-Taylor-Baker-Boston-Bethea. I know that Benwikere was playing mostly with the safeties during the offseason, but that could've changed once Boston came in. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up our 6th DB. I also didn't know that he was only 26. He has some football ahead of him if he's actually good.

Garth, thank you very much for the feedback. I really appreciate it. I made a mistake, though. I meant that Benwikere could be the fifth or sixth defensive back, with two starting cornerbacks and two starting safeties.

I share your thinking about Campbell, by the way. I would be surprised if he does not make the final roster. I would not start him in front of Benwikere, though.

Thanks for the response, AZ. Well, as you wrote, it would certainly be a good idea if they signed a new receiver. I have made some suggestions in other threads, but maybe they want to wait and see who are being cut from other teams. It could also be the case with a tight end.

#4 is just an indication of how bad and thin out LB corps is because Scooby sucks... Just to damn slow.

I think I get what you are saying, Shane. Scooby Wright certainly hasn’t proved anything on defense so far in his NFL career. He has been a good special teams player, but I guess that is not enough to get on the final roster.

I would sign NaVorro Bowman today. It’s not that I am blind to the fact that they need at least one other linebacker. It’s just that I like Wright, and I don’t think he was a great athlete either when he had that absolutely magnificent season in college. Afterwards he was talked about as a potential first round pick, but then he got injured. I obviously don’t know if he would have been a first round pick, but I think it do speak to his abilities that the conversation was even there. He was great in that season because of his instincts. That he was able to read and react to the play faster than anyone else. Now, he might never regain the abilities he had pre-injury, and even if he does it might never translate well enough to the NFL. I just like him.

I guess I feel what others have said in this thread, Guernsey. I don’t think we are exaggerating the problem. Brandon Williams might become really good someday, but I doubt it will be with the Cardinals. The previous regime did not manage to coach him up, and now Steve Wilks and Dave Merritt, both masters of coaching defensive backs, have not managed it. Now, you can obviously make the argument that they have only had about two month all in all to coach Williams, but I just don’t think they can give him much more time since he have had two full seasons to get better.

Gandhi, what's your thoughts on Chris Campbell? I was non-plussed with his performance. Not bad, but not good either. Might have to watch again.

IMO Campbell is going to make the roster. He had impact on special teams and thats how rookies make a squad.

on the DB note, I was really pleased with Taylor....liked the deal when we made it...and like it even more now...the kid is aggressive and fearless...Benwikere is who he has always been... IMO this is the best secondary we have had in a few years.

For a sixth round pick playing in his first game, I thought that Campbell did okay. Not great, but good enough to give me hope that, with time, he can play CB in the NFL. Even if it's not this year. As oaken pointed out ST will be his path in his rookie year.

Oaken, yes...Taylor was a comfort on that other side. It was wierd seeing JB's ole number actually making plays on the ball. LOL

I'd be good with that!

As it turns out, AZ, they did take your suggestion as they have signed a receiver named Austin Wolf out Akron while they released another receiver, Rashad Ross. Wolf didn’t set anything on fire throughout his college career, but it wouldn’t be the first time a guy turned out to be a better pro- than college player. I don’t know. Chances are he probably won’t make the final roster, but I know I am rooting for him, anyway, for no other reason than I would be so happy if they had a guy named Wolf on the gameday roster. :)

Like you, Philly, I was kind of underwhelmed. I have asked myself today what I actually expected of him, because after all he was only a sixth round pick. I guess it’s just that the media insiders have kind of been talking him up a bit. I would, however, be highly surprised if he did not make the final roster. First and foremost because I think Steve Wilks like him and think he can make a good cornerback out of him, and second because he was part of Steve Keim’s and Steve Wilks’ first draft class together, so I would think that Campbell has an advantage over other of the young cornerbacks.

It's nice knowing we have a good number two corner in his prime across from PP21. As well as 6 defensive backs that can actually play. It's too bad Cash got hurt he really looked like he would have been a good backup for us. Hopefully Hodges can look as good and be a good backup. We are so thin at linebacker it might be a good idea to bring in Navarro Bowman or even Dansby just so we know somebody can play if one of our starters goes down.

Right now I would hand Cap Capi the backup spot at LDE. Nobody else has stepped up yet other than him to take the spot.

I agree with most of this. Cap Capi has looked good in preseason for 3 straight years now but keeps getting cut for some reason. I would love for him to get to play against the Saints #1's and see if he can get pressure and hold up against the run. Capi can eat 3rd stringers lunch so let's see him make so plays on true NFL Olineman.

I really do like our secondary right now. It is a nice mix of youth, experience and athleticism. Peterson is great. Bethea is consistent. Baker is unproven, but I have liked what he has shown. Jamar Taylor has experience across from a good CB. Boston is nice depth. Same with Benwikere. Rudy Ford offers top end athleticism. Campbell has size size and experience to build off of.

We have had some good secondaries, but this may end up being the group with the best blend of talent and depth.
