– I am almost fainting of excitement with this draft.
– I guess the braintrust have the same approach as me: to find stars. Will Johnson can be great, and Jordan Burch has a lot of untapped potential.
– Other than the injury, Will Johnson fell because of questions about his long speed. Well, in Gannon’s zone heavy defense, deep speed doesn’t matter so much, so nothing to worry about.
– Nine picks ahead – when WR Kyle Williams got drafted – I started hoping for Jordan Burch, just because of his playing style and potential. Halfway predicting a player that far ahead in one of the middle rounds is almost impossible (and obviously close to pure luck. I am not trying to praise myself). Fun moment for me.
– I guess this moves Zaven Collins to ILB as replacement for Kyzir White. Don’t know if he can do it well, but that could be another upgrade from day two.
– This probably means that they bring back Will Hernandez.
– Forget everything about statistic and analysis about Will Johnson. Heck, he was ranked #4 on my Cards board. All of that can be thrown out the window because of the injury. However, if his knee doesn’t explode, he can be a top ten CB in the NFL – and pushing Melton to a #2 role is also a clear upgrade.
– Context is everything: Jordan Burch had a 16.3% pass rush win rate last season, which puts him about middle of the pack. However, 22.5% of those pass rush attempts came when he lined up as either a 4i or even further inside, which was over 40% of all the snaps he played. On snaps where he lined up at least as a 5-tech (“outside the OT’s shoulder) or wider, his pass rush win rate goes up to 21.4% which is 10th among edge rushers in this draft.
Further context-specific: on true pass rush sets (no RPO, no screen game, no play action game), Burch ranked 15th. Better than Jalon Walker, Nic Scourton, and Donovan Ezeiruaku.
– WR Jalen Royals would be a fantastic fourth-round pick. Highly doubt that he will be available, but he fits in well in Petzing’s scheme, and he is one of the better deep threats in the entire draft.
– At some point I would like to get back a sixth-round pick somehow, just because they don’t have one now, and only have three picks today (shoutout to Steve Keim for paying a pick for 10 games of Robbie Anderson with seven receptions for 76 yards). It’s just more fun to watch the more picks they have.
