It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know what is wrong with this team. We sure as hell don't need to trade prospects for another over the hill starter. Its the bullpen, stupid!!!!

Interesting facts about our BP that make things a bit complicated IMO:

1) Our BP leads MLB in wins, but there are 18 teams with more BP losses

2) Our BP has a positive WAR right now

3) Our BP is leading MLB in leverage index, or the critical nature of the game situation

4) Our team leads MLB in "shutdowns" which is a measurement of the times a BP pitcher contributes to a teams chances of winning, but is only 10 in the opposite, called "meltdowns"

5) Our BP is 3rd in MLB in LOB%, better than avg in K/9, BB/9, ERA, and WHIP

Interesting stats but the bottom line is that Putz & Bell are terrible and should be cut. 19 blow saves are 19 blown saves. GM Towers is the problem.

Bad news is the limited relief pitcher market is a seller's market and there is no shortage of teams looking for relievers for the playoff push. Prices will be high in terms of prospects.

I don't get the hate for Putz. He was injured early in the year and since coming back he has had one bad outing, his first one. Other than that, he has not given up a run and has dropped his ERA by almost a full run.

That was answered by Kirk Gibson and JJ Putz.

"We'll try to find J.J. some innings elsewhere where he can throw and get his arm freshened up.

"He'll do a lot more long tossing and stuff and try to get it built up and see if he can't find more of the velocity he had earlier in the year."

Monday marked Putz's second appearance since coming off the disabled list. He pitched one-third of an inning in an 11-5 loss to the Atlanta Braves last Saturday before surrendering the tying run against the Mets.

"I talked to J.J. -- he came in and talked to us -- he feels what we see, there's not a lot coming out of his arm right now," Gibson said. "His velocity is way down, his fastball command isn't great, maybe he's feeling a little dead arm right now.

"So, we're going to kind of change his role right now."
