If only we had Greer, Baker and Junior today! 60 sacks in one year as a team...in 14 games.

They played 16 in 1983. 16 game seasons have been in place since 1978 and only in the strike years of 1982 and 1987 were less than 16 games played(9 in '82 and 15 in '87). Still, 60 sacks is impressive. Means they averaged nearly 4 sacks per game. This current team can't get 4 sacks in a month. Had Lomax not gotten hurt early in the season, Lord knows what this team might have been able to do. And I remember that God awful tie against the Giants on Monday Night with O'Donahue missing a chip shot 25 yard FG in OT.

NJ,

Thanks for posting. Hearing the names remind me a lot of watching them during this time.

Thanks for posting! Brings back a lot of memories. O'Donahue's hook was actually missed from 18 yards out. Brutal.

This guy has Cardinal highlights from 1980-83. I'm going to watch the playoff year of 1982.

Too bad Lomax got hurt he was so good. We lost some of his prime years to that injury.

20-20 final score if I remember right...don't get me started on O'Donahue!

Was the '83 team one of the best Cardinals team ever? I know the record wasn't the best, but they had stars on both offense and defense.

If you look at that team from the last 11 weeks of 83 through the end of 84, they were a pretty great team , yet no playoffs. It was too bad...probably have made a lot if noise in the playoffs if not for their putrid kicker. They were Super Bowl caliber.

The kicker didn't help obviously but it was really Lomax hurting his shoulder or elbow(forget which) that killed that team.

The 84 team was 9-7 in a 3 way tie with the Giants and Cowboys for the last wildcard berth and we lost the 3 way tiebreaker.

The reason we were only 9-7 was a 3 game losing streak to the Rams, Cowboys and Giants where Lomax was playing hurt and couldn't throw the ball nearly 100%. We were one of the best scoring teams in teh NFL that year but scored 10, 17 and 10 in those 3 losses. Lomax should have sat, the rumor is he wasn't practicing at all, but the Cards knew they had no good backup(Rick McIvor) so he played and we lost. He got healthy enough late to win 3 in a row but then the heartbreaking loss at RFK where were got completely hosed by the refs and missed the game winning FG(long one with us running out to kick it).

then drugs tore that team apart.

It probably was the best Cardinals team in St Louis.

The least talked about reason we didn't make the playoffs in 1984 was O'Donahue missing an extra point in week 1 against GB. We lost 24-23. Then the loss to the Cowboys especially hurt due to a bogus offensive PI call on Roy Green that cost us a TD. The most exciting game that season was going toe to toe with Marino and the Dolphins. Nearly 1,000 yards of total offense between the 2 teams and we ended up losing by 8.

Neil O'Donahue. Rick McIver. It's names like that which really make you appreciate BASK.Constantly looking for that .00001% roster improvement. Yes, those 83-84 teams were loaded, especially 84. Man I loved watching Neil Lomax play when healthy.

The all white uniforms with the Cardinal on the sleeve and red and black stripes is still the best uniforms ever, and since we wore white at home it made the Cowboys wear there blue jerseys which they hated, NJ CARD FAN I might have seen you when the Card came to Giants stadium and when they played the Giants at Yankee Stadium, it's a Jersey thing lol

That wouldn't have been me. I've been to the Meadowlands once and that was in 2008 vs Jets. Most of the games I've seen live were at the Vet in Philly.

1985 we lost 30-7. 1986 we tied 10-10. 2 of the worst games I ever saw. 1987 we won 31-19, our last game as the St. Louis Cardinals at the Vet. I was at all 3. My last Cards/Eagles game live was 1990, Joe Bugel's first win as head coach. My next will be this season.
