Sorry if this has been covered already, but could someone please clarify the 1st & One status? On first and ten, they complete a 4 yeard pass, plus a five yard facemask penalty (which I thought had been changed to NOT an automatic first down, but I guess I am mistaken). So if it is an Automatic First Down penalty, why is it not a new 1st & 10. Seems like 1st & 1 is the best of both worlds; at least the 15 yard penalty would have resulted in teh more difficult 1st & 10.

Obviously this is all moot if we just tackle Smith on the scramble. F!!!!

The gamebooks shows it as follows;

(2:00 warning in second half)

Gamebook said:
1-10 SF 46 (2:00) A Smith pass short right to A. Battle to 50 for 4 yards (A Wilson,; K Dansby)
PENALTY on ARZ-K Dansby, Face Mask (5 Yards), 5 yards, enforced at 50. Caught at 50.

1-1 (1:52) A Smith pass incomplete short middle to F Gore

So on first down, gain of 4 + 5 yards and a first down for the penalty makes 1-1.

Thanks, but I guess I still don't understand. If the 5-yard version of the facemask penalty does NOT bring an automatic "1st % 10", and simply adds another 5 yards to the play that was just run, why is it not 2nd and 1?? So they get the benefit of the yards of the play, the yards of the penatky, AND it's still first down?? That is horsesh^t to me, but perhaps I am missing something. I would rather give them the 15 yardsinstead of 5 and make it 1st & 10.

If that was supposed to be 2nd & 1, then the 9ers got a phantom 5th down like Colorado vs. Missouri from the Eric "Sleeping With" Bienemy era.

F!
