OMG! The sky has fallen. They must be the first and only college students to ever do a little weed and shrooms. They should have done steroids or HGH. Universities allow that.

2 Gonzaga players suspended after arrest

By JOHN K. WILEY, Associated Press Writer Sun Feb 11, 3:47 AM ET

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga basketball players Josh Heytvelt and Theo Davis were suspended from the team following their arrest in which police said marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms were found in their car.

The players were booked into the Spokane County Jail on Friday night for investigation of drug possession, Cheney Police Cmdr. Rick Campbell said. Prosecutors have until the end of Wednesday to file charges. The two were released Saturday on their own recognizance, the jail said.

The players were arrested in nearby Cheney. Campbell said the amount of marijuana was enough only for a misdemeanor, but possession of mushrooms is a felony.

Campbell said police pulled over the car because its tail lights were not working. Officers smelled marijuana and searched the car, he said.

"It was close to midnight," Campbell said. "They needed to have their lights on."

Athletic director Mike Roth said the university is still gathering information, and the two players will face the same disciplinary standards as any other students.

"The program is shocked and extremely disappointed," coach Mark Few said at a news conference before leaving for Saturday night's game against Saint Mary's. "We regret the far-reaching effect this has on our program and the university."

Heytvelt, a 6-foot-11 sophomore, is a starting forward and the team's second-leading scorer at 15.5 points a game. Davis, a freshman from Canada who played most of his high school ball in Philadelphia, has not played this season following shoulder surgery in October.

Gonzaga, always a tough team come tournament time, is unranked and having a mediocre year at 17-8. The Bulldogs are tied with Santa Clara at the top of the West Coast Conference at 7-2.

The Valley so low.
I certainly agree that this nation is totally screwed up in the ways it treats MJ, other drugs, vs. liquor, tobacco, 'medicines', other chemicals, and pollution. Penalties ought to be parallel to amount of social harm, including predictable medical bills that society (humanely and rightly) helps pay for.

That being said, having that stuff in the car is about equivalent to open liquor bottles, or DUI, which gets sanctioned and publicized, too. We have too many screwed-up drivers on the road, and scholarship athletes should not be among them.

They were pulled over for tail light infraction. Sounds hokey to me.

Their taillights weren't working so they were pulled over because they suspected the car was hotwired.

When they were pulled over, Heytvelt had mushrooms in his bag, Davis had a partially smoked joint in his jacket pocket, and smelled strongly of pot.

Not a huge problem but they really have no reason to complain they just got caught.

I stiil have memories of a couple of locals , nearby town of Parkland, Fl., incident. Everyone who wanted them would go out into the cow pastures and pick ' shrooms. Never hurt anyone. Well, one night Officer Cobb, decided to put an end to it. He walked out into the field and blew the brains out of 2 pickers. Yup. Bullets to the back of their heads. Still makes no sense.

A pin joint and a bag of shrooms.

25 % of all prison inmates are in for drug violations, 80 % of those are for pot, and of those 80 % only 5 % for distribution.

I know but the point is they didn't pull them over because of drugs, they pulled them over for something else, they just then discovered the drugs.

If you're not doing the drugs, you drive away from that with a fixit ticket.

You bought it Russ. How does one get the strong odor of " pot " from a half smoked pin joint?

Search and seizure????? It is always a coincidence. Sounds like they were carrying . Not doing. At least they got 2 high profile thug criminals off of the streets .

Having smoked pot a few times when I was like 15, and dated someone that smoked pot(when I was in my early 20's), I can assure you that you can get the strong smell of pot from just a few hits.

It depends how recently you smoked it, and from the description it almost sounds like he was literally smoking the joint when they got pulled over, and put it in his pocket.

To me it's like the people who complain when they get caught speeding, why aren't you going after murderers or rapists. If you break the law and get caught, it's on you.

IMHO.

i'm not a big fan of drug laws and often think that police overstep their boundaries in an effort to pull people over just to investigate

it doesn't create much to give the smell - if they were smoking in the car or in their clothes it would probably still be present enough to draw cause

The "war on drugs" is a multibillion dollar failed industry but this is not the right forum in which to argue this.

FYI, according to NBAdraftnet, Heytvelt had over 30 grams(just over an ounce) of mushrooms which is a felony. They also say he's already fathered 3 children, with 3 different mothers,so he was widely expected to file for the draft this year before the arrest. Gonzaga players say they were told by Few that "this is it, this the team from now on" so they apparently have been told neither Heytvelt nor Davis will be back.

He may have just shroomed himself completely out of the draft.

I know nothing about mushrooms as drugs, how many people can get high off an ounce?

If I read that right it said never take more than a gram at one time so that implies Heytvelt had at least 30 doses on him?

He's only like 20 or 21 so having 3 kids already he's putting Federline to shame.

Where did you get the 3 kids thing? You have mentioned it twice. Is the guy TPT or just doesn't believe in BC.

It's in the nbadraftnet report on him. They have a section on players who are rising(like Afflalo at UCLA) and then guys who are falling. Heytvelt is on the falling list and it says he has 3 kids with 3 different women so he everyone expected him to file for the draft this year and now he may have completely hosed his chances of getting drafted. I guess they figure he's got a lot of child support due so he'd jump to the NBA?
