With the NFL Draft a month away, the Houston Texans have completed a bulk of their free agency signings with players who will become immediate impacts on the offense next fall. Still, if the Texans wanted to target another receiver, interior offensive lineman or linebacker ahead of the draft, they have the funds at $18.5 million to spend on a prospect with upside.
The Texans are expected to select an offensive lineman early in the draft, including a guard and tackle, but that shouldn't stop them from also adding a proven veteran to the room on a team-friendly deal.
Will Hernandez has been one of the league's better pass-protecting interior offensive linemen over the past several seasons in Arizona. He's coming off a season-ending knee injury that limited him to five games but is expected to be fully healthy come Week 1. Since he's coming off an injury, most teams are probably looking to land Hernandez on a one-year prove-it contract before inking him to a long-term deal.
That often fits the mold for general manager Nick Caserio targets later on in free agency. In 2023, he signed defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins, tight end Dalton Schultz and running back Devin Singletary within a week of each other on prove-it deals. Schultz ended up having the best season of the three and earned a new three-year extension. Both Rankins and Singletary also were productive and agreed to long-term deals in Cincinnati and New York, respectively.
If Hernandez doesn't return to Phoenix, a trip over to Houston should be in play. If he's gone, the Texans still have options to target before on the clock at No. 25. They still could also use a secondary linebacker, a center prospect with upside and a starting receiver to pair with Christian Kirk and Nico Collins.
Here's a quick list of 20 free agents who could interest the Texans.
After patching up their roster during free agency, the Texans are scheduled to make seven picks in the 2025 NFL draft, which will be held in Green Bay at Lambeau Field from April 24-26
