Did anyone watch the women's road cycling yesterday?

Talk about heartbreak...

Add to that that women's high jump has stood since 1987.

The men's record holder is from Cuba, the women's from Bulgaria. Whether PED's and testing now played a part is up to question.

The men's American record has stood since 1991

The second and third highest men's jumps have come in the last two years, so there is a chance for it to be broken.

Also - the Men's LONG Jump record hasn't been broken since 1991, women since 1988

Of the top 25 all-time long jumps, only 4 have occurred in the last 5 years. Most date from the last century.

Women = only 1 of top 25 has occurred in last 5 years.

That's suggesting that current athletes are clean. Im cynical enough to say I think virtually every elite athlete in every sport on this earth cheats to some extent. Most are just better than others at hiding it.

You have an army of sponsors/doctors/sports scientists protecting you, its not always easy to persecute an icon.

Lance Armstrong was never caught for doping by his dope tests. It had to be somebody close to him ratting him out. See what I mean.

While it is likely that some are still doping, the testing procedures are light-years ahead of the late 80's/90's, when there was widespread doping.

I dont care about the Olympics, not even watching it.

If you think athletes are clean, good for you. I happen to think that breaking a world record by 2 seconds almost is a pretty big sign.

Especially in a discipline like that where the world record was gradually improved but even by that kind of difference since 1976 when it was done by a convincted doper.

I don't think it matters. Winning is winning regardless of year. Its 2016 and most of Russia just got booted because their corruption went all the way up through their athletics governing body.

Silly to think that corruption doesn't exist elsewhere with 200+ countries competing. Russia just got caught.

*should note that "cheating" is well beyond the horse steroids they gave athletes in the 1980s. Its so sophisticated at this point, its incredible. Millions (if not billions) of dollars depends on athletes in these sports (esp the commercial ones). How can you think they and their owners aren't willing to do everything within their means to get that edge.

I thought for sure the women's volleyball team was going to lose today with the way started off the match....nice to see them pull out the victory.

That road race course was abysmal. Three of the top dozen or so cyclists in the world, Nibali (double collarbone fracture), Porte ( broken shoulder blade), and Thomas all crashed separately in the same section. Then van Vleuten's horrific incident in nearly the same spot a day later, who fortunately "merely" wound up with a concussion and small spinal fractures. Racing is inherently dangerous but the poorly designed course amplified it.

It was exciting to watch Mara Abbott nearly hold on, didn't quite get enough help from the other Americans before going on the breakaway. Needed just a little more separation to hold off the sprinters, but that's the rock paper scissors aspect of it.

Yea... It's been said over and over again that this Rio course is BY FAR the toughest Olympic course ever. And yesterday it was raining on that mountain which made it all the more miraculous that van Vleuten was the only female to crash... They said she was doing nearly 50MPH when she wiped out... Amazing.
Mara Abbott got zero help from her teammates... That was agonizing to see the group of 3 rail her in down the final stretch...

What on earth are you going on about now?

Is this because Germany aren't top of the medal table?

I think the games have been pretty compelling so far, have been well managed, and have had none of the issues or problems everyone feared. It's been pretty great.

Well, one medalist won his bronze medal in Judo and then was beaten and robbed on a beach. SMH. Thankfully, the thief only got away with a cell phone and not the medal.

Olympic medalist beat up, robbed on beach in Rio

http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/oly...ist-beat-up-robbed-on-beach-in-rio/ar-BBvtvw5

Not long after Dirk Van Tichelt won a bronze metal in judo, the Belgian athlete was beat up and hospitalized by a opportunistic thief on the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, home to the 2016 Summer Olympics.

While the beach bandit got away with a cellphone, he did not, thankfully, make off with that shiny new medal.

I think they've been great, but can't see how you can say well managed.

The green pool was ridiculous, the diving last night with the Mexican team was very badly run, the music playing during the swimming not being controlled properly, the horrible crash by Van Vleuten and medics taking an age to get to her.

Great games still.
