Great pick. Solid player with a ton of starts in college. Could see him playing day 1 in NFL.

Good pick
DRAFT PROJECTION
Round 2-3

Johnson was a five-star recruit as a tackle coming out of high school, but Pitt coaches convinced him that a move to guard made sense for the team -- and for his future. They were right. Since his freshman year, when he started twice at left tackle and once at right guard, Johnson has been a fixture at the left guard position. He started 39 straight games for the Panthers, winning second-team All-ACC honors as a junior as well as first-team all-conference and multiple All-American awards in 2016.

STRENGTHS
Solid athlete when asked to play in space. Plays with leg drive as run blocker. Uses choppy, accelerated feet into contact and keeps chopping them through contact to secure the block. Operates with quality balance and limited waist-bending. Has the arm length of a tackle. Understands his job on each play. Has an accurate radar in seeking out second-level targets and connecting at a high percentage. Excels on short pulls with smooth lateral footwork and solid, squared contact. Keeps hands inside and will punch and re-set hands when necessary. Sets up with good base and anchor in pass pro.
WEAKNESSES
Is a little inconsistent with smoothness coming out of his stance. At times too aggressive when he moves up to second level and will climb beyond his target. Needs to improve patience on his climb to create more consistency with his angles. Needs to let hands go more quickly in run game. Punches and pushes target with authority but doesn't snatch the framework and lock in, allowing active defenders to spin and squirm out of his blocks.

BOTTOM LINE
Five-star prospect coming out of high school, Johnson was a full-time starter for three years at Pitt and was known for his consistency and well-rounded game. He has functional power to turn defenders out of the hole and enough athleticism to match any run-game scheme. Johnson doesn't carry bad weight and should be able to add more bulk with no problem. While he has some weaknesses, nothing appears to be glaring and he should set into a starter's role right away and become a solid NFL guard.

Had a health flag on a liver condition but it's controllable. I had him as a late 2. He likely can play this year as he's near NFL-ready. I'llput up more on him, but this was the BPA if the health info is correct. I've got quite a bit on him.

I think all 4 guys will be able to contribute from day one and maybe even compete for starting spots. Very solid top end of the draft. CB is our biggest glaring issue but maybe that gets addressed by a Keim-time move in August,

Love it! Wasn't thinking of him here but a perfect choice to come in and compete for one of our few glaring offensive needs.

Offensive Guard Specific Traits

Pass Protection 2 Tall with good arm length (35 1/4") and big hands (10 7/8"). Above average initial quickness off the snap. Not an elite athlete but has enough quickness, length, strength and awareness to be effective in most one-on-one pass pro matchups. Digs in and anchors well. Natural knee bender. Showed much improved patience and cut down on the lunging in 2016. Keeps feet moving and is typically active with his hands in order to maintain leverage. Has just adequate lateral agility, so he will struggle when he doesn't win with hands.

Run Blocking 1 Highly effective zone blocker that fires off the ball and flashes good initial surge. Not an overpowering drive-blocker but keeps his feet moving through contact and has enough lower-body strength to generate consistent push. Takes sound angles for the most part and does a good job of cutting off linebackers. Plays with really good balance and stays on his feet. Good effort working through the whistle. Keeps shoulders square to the line of scrimmage when pulling and working laterally. Lacks elite range but takes good angles on pulls and stays balanced. Can do a better job of latching on with hands.

Awareness 1 Excellent game experience (51 career games played, 42 starts). Picks up most line stunts and blitzes in pass pro. Can adjust to last second stems. Above average adjusting on the fly and always finds someone to hit as a run blocker. Assignment sound climbing up to the second level and does a good job tracking linebackers on combination blocks.

Toughness 2 Good initial aggressiveness and physicality. Effort isn't an issue either. Blocks to the whistle and occasionally gets under defender' skin. Not a mauler but he's a consistent finisher.

Honestly if we had taken this guy at our original 3rd rounder it would have been a decent pick.
