I think they bring in at least one more TE off waivers, or possibly in trade. I guess a lot will depend on whether Niklas is fully healthy or not.

I havent gotten the opportunity to mention how stupid it is to put Ellington at WR. I shall do it now.

What a stupid idea to put Ellington at WR.

Hes a good WR....for a RB. Hes a terrible WR for a WR.

The reason he gets open as a RB is because hes being covered by linebackers and safeties. He can beat some linebackers and safeties...because hes a RB. Thats who RBs are covered by.

But as a WR, he will be covered by CBs...CBs are not linebackers. CBs will eat Ellington alive. If I were a young, nervous rookie CB, id be begging my coach to let me cover Ellington. Id make the All Pro rookie team if I got to cover him every week.

Just leave Ellington at RB and go get a WR if you need a WR.

Meh. I'll leave it to the people that get paid to make those decisions instead of someone behind a keyboard. I think Ellington will work well getting the ball in space.

Your opinion is "I have no opinion. I defer to daddy Keim in all things football related"

OK.

Must have some reading comprehension issues. I said I think it would work well since Ellington is good in space. He could easily get yac. His issue is mainly running between the tackles. Which he can't do.

I'm probably wrong about this, but I get the feeling that BA considers TE to be one of the most flexible positions on the football team. Unlike most other positions (where a filling a roster hole may be considered a huge priority - to be addressed by draft, trade or free agency) he'll accept what he's given at TE and scheme his way around a weakness there rather than spend a lot of time and energy toward upgrading the position.

Thoughts?

They don't throw to the TE a lot in the current offensive system. That simplifies the search a lot at the position. Most teams are going to be grabbing the guys with proven receiving skills higher in the draft. Cards can sit and wait for college or NFL free agents who are better blockers than receivers to fall to them. If you can tweak your system to feature position players with skill sets which aren't in vogue at the moment, you get much better value out of the draft or free agency. But Niklas can do it all if he's healthy. He could be as good an all round TE as there is in the league. Gresham is no slouch either, he was drafted ahead of Gronkowski, Hernandez, and Graham in 2010

Niklas to this point, thanks to injuries and underwhelming production, has been a major disappointment. To say that "he could be as good an all-around TE as there is in this league" is a stretch of epic proportions. Even last pre-season when he was healthy, he made one big catch and run in PS game #1 (causing BA to rave effusively about him) and then he disappeared the rest of PS and the first 3 games of the regular season (1 catch for 0 yards) until he injured his wrist.

The only season in which he has played in all 16 games was in 2015...where he amassed a whopping 33 yards in 4 catches.

There has been no indication whatsoever during his 3 years that he could even be an average TE, let alone a good one.

No, he has a terrific tool set for the position, smart and great attitude. The coaches rave about him when he's on the field, and he was playing ahead of Gresham, a 6 year vet who was a mid first round pick. Troy still just 24. He is the Blaine Gabbert of TEs ;).... just needs to catch a break, career wise.
