Sure, I'll circle the wagons again here.I was talking to a friend of mine who is a Rams fan and he was arguing that if the Cardinals didnt have Hopkins, that they would have one of the sorriest WR corps in the league.
First off, the Cardinals DO have Hopkins. Secondly the other state is false because their are probably a dozen WR Corps that are worse.
Your comment on the 80 yard run is reminiscent of that argument. You CAN'T take that 80 yard run away! Explosive plays are incredibly important. And your comment that every RB could make that play is absurdly false. Drake basically got a good opening and outran the Seahawks defense on that play.
That's why I like Drake. He's a smooth run who gets through the hole quickly and reads his blocks very well. Not quite shifty, but he does a great job finding creases.
Drake is absolutely replaceable, but the issue is that the Cardinals didnt have the draft capital to replace him this year. Maybe a trade down from the late first to early second next year
In statistics, it's important to give less weight to outliers. Drake's run is a feat that will probably not be replicated, because his long runs do not stand out among his sample size. Unlike a player like Derrick Henry or Tyreek Hill, who frequently produce long gains during their play, Drake simply does not.
Taking a play in which almost all of the hard work was done for him (he doesn't make a guy miss, he doesn't even make a single cut), it's hard to let that account for close to 50% of his production for the day and say it's consistent and replicable. I've brought it up before, but it's like pretending Tim Hightower's 70 yard run against the Saints is something we should have anticipated him to replicate going forward for the Cardinals. It simply isn't.
When blended with the otherwise mediocre production by the player over the majority of his games, it means he's no sure thing.
You admit he's replaceable, and that was my argument all along in not re-signing him this offseason. We have him now, he's going to be our starting back, let's see what he can do. But his entire history as a player, through college and the NFL, does not indicate he'll be a 1,200 yard, 16 TD player. It would be an anomaly and major surprise for him to do that. (And it would be the second best RB season for the Cardinals ever.)
