But is there a rule on which player has to pick a spot? If there isn’t then there should be. One guy shouldn’t get an advantage by avoiding another.
I don't know it but they pretty much have a rule for everything so I'd imagine it's covered. Regardless, the refs have to control the game. Portis wanted to body up with Claxton and Giannis wanted the advantage on the opposite side. Whether it's by rule or tradition though, they seem to side with the defensive players if both groups continue to jockey for position. And once they tell you to remain set, that's it.

Good question. I'm not sure about this incident but I have seen it happen before when a referee instructed a player to pick a spot and stay there.

I could be wrong but I think the officials got it wrong. It seems like Claxton should have been the one to line up first since the Nets were shooting FT's.

Here are the league rules on FT's and lining up....

During a free throw attempt for a common foul, each of the spaces nearest the end- line must be occupied by an opponent of the free throw shooter. Teammates of the free throw shooter must occupy the next adjacent spaces on each Only one of the third spaces may be occupied by an opponent of the free throw shooter. It is not mandatory that either of the third spaces be occupied by an opponent but may not be occupied by a teammate. If there is a discrepancy, teammates of the free throw shooter will occupy the spaces first. Players occupying lane spaces may not extend themselves over their lane spaces in front of an opponent or be touching the lane line or floor inside the line when the ball is released by the shooter. They may not vacate their lane space more than 3’ from the lane line before the ball is released. Players not occupying lane spaces must remain on the court behind the three point line above the free throw line extended and may not be touching the line or floor inside the line when the ball is released.

Now I'm confused. Which player was called for the delay? I didn't watch it, just assumed from the way things were worded that Claxton was penalized. Which seemed right to me and aligns with what you've quoted. But if Giannis was whistled then I'm really confused.

I was a little confused as well. I don't believe they called it a delay of game. The way the conversation was going here I thought Giannis was whistled for one.

The shooting team should set first. This case the nets.
Giannis chooses his spot.
Refs got the call right by penalizing the nets.
Thanks for the discussion. I didn't know this rule. Pretty funny though and I had never seen anything like it before.

But wait a second, wasn't Giannis positioning himself in the first slot closest to the hoop? That is for the non-shooting (defensive) team. Oh, I get it. You're saying Claxton had already picked his spot and Giannis is allowed to move?

If the Thunder get Cam do they even lose more than 2 games in route to the finals? He’s averaging 19 ppg on 50/43/90 splits and would be their 7-8th man…

Depends on when his annual 20 game injury is that then derails the rest of his season, never getting back to zero and becoming really inconsistent.

More like wishing it. ;)

True. I think there could be something to it though. Beal was fine with going to Milwaukee initially but chose Phoenix. I don't blame him for that at all. He's be a better fit there though. Middleton would fit better here. We just have to hope Milwaukee is still interested.

Middleton for Beal. I'm calling it.

It’s hard to imagine Miami wanting Middleton who is completely cooked and still owed money beyond this year.

There’s a lot of chatter about Detroit because Ivey is out for the season but idk why they’d need a guy owed $150+ mil as a one year replacement.

Miami? I gave up on the Butler deal a while ago. Pat Riley won't lose a trade with the money involved of a Butler deal so I'd rather the Suns avoid it altogether than get involved.

I can see something happening with Milwaukee though as a shake up. Beal's people were in touch with the front office of the Bucks prior to the Suns announcing their interest. With Middleton being a late scratch today there could be something at play. Middleton for Beal was the deal initially rumored when Beal said he'd waive his NTC out of Washington.

Gambo is putting out some possible trade destinations that might appeal to Bradley Beal.
