It's pretty incredible how fast the Rams built through the draft the last 2 years.
2022 and before it was pretty rough drafting for them but they hit home runs that the last 2.

I think this highlights the difference between meeting draft expectations and exceeding them.

There has never been an NFL draft that you can look back on and not find whiffs.
There are players that have had success with team A that he wouldn’t have had on team B. There are injuries. There are systems. There is roster strength.
I haven’t seen one person on this site suggest we should have drafted Puka Nacua. Not one. And yet I would bet he would not be as successful if he were here.

Yes, but again, it is tough to build through the draft when you are not finding these contributing players later in the draft. Like I said earlier, I think Monti has probably met the expectations of average drafts based upon the picks he had. He has drafted a top 35 WR. He has drafted a top 16 LT. A top 12 nickel CB. A top 90 WR. That's good. When you factor in the draft equity used, it is more of an ok. I agree some of it is dependent on the team, roster, and scheme. Maybe Tip looks more like Tucker Kraft on a different roster. Maybe DTD is a mid round steal on a different roster.

Basically, Monti is a C drafter for me so far. Average. With his current attitude towards FA, he probably needs to improve that.

Fair assessment. Do you think the scouting dept ( and Monti) should get credit for recognizing that the 2025 draft is deep in two big needs, that being edge and DT. I have to think it’s more than just luck.

I don't know how to answer your question.

Do I think the Cardinals front office neglected the EDGE position in 2024 intentionally because of the EDGE draft class in 2025? No, I don't think they did.

Same with DL. Monti added two (relatively) expensive FAs and a 1st round pick to the DL room last year. That doesn't strike me as planning for the 2025 draft.

I also feel like they ignored the depth at WR in the 2024 draft which was a very strong draft class for WRs.

I think it will be a minor factor this off-season in that I imagine they won't add multiple, mid to bottom level DL in FA knowing the draft might present them with better, cheaper options.

Do I think the Cardinals front office neglected the EDGE position in 2024 intentionally because of the EDGE draft class in 2025? No, I don't think they did.

Same with DL. Monti added two (relatively) expensive FAs and a 1st round pick to the DL room last year. That doesn't strike me as planning for the 2025 draft.

I also feel like they ignored the depth at WR in the 2024 draft which was a very strong draft class for WRs.

I think it will be a minor factor this off-season in that I imagine they won't add multiple, mid to bottom level DL in FA knowing the draft might present them with better, cheaper options.

Could be they didn’t have a high opinion for the 2004 draft when it comes to edges they value?

The FA EDGE class was the way to upgrade EDGE last off-season. The draft was mid.

Just made this point in another thread.

We had the money AND excess draft capital to sign or trade for numerous impact EDGE players.

And anyone who makes that excuse for us not signing anyone this offseason should be prepared for that truth to be volleyed right back at that excuse for why we’re not better on D.

It's one reason I don't like the idea of trying to time up when you are competing or trying to sign guys. Add meaningful talent in FA when it offers it to you. Try to maximize the depth each draft class uniquely offers you. Take advantage of trades when you can. In the meantime, lower cost and lower risk dudes to fill in gaps.

It's one reason I don't like the idea of trying to time up when you are competing or trying to sign guys. Add meaningful talent in FA when it offers it to you.
