I would not be surprised if both OT's and Harrison are gone - we trade down.
If both OTs and MHJ are gone, it means we fell back to 7 in the draft because we won. If that's the case, trading back only guarantees we're not getting a premium player yet again. This strange idea of always wanting to trade back needs to end. We are desperate for premium talent and staying put at 7 would be the way to do it.

Now, if we're sitting at 4 and MHJ is gone, I wouldn't mind a slight trade back, because we'd still be guaranteed one of the next 2 wideouts or one of the 2 tackles.

Agreed. Particularly after seeing our second first drop last night.

Picking the right player is the only thing that matters.

Perceived talent certainly is a factor but there are several other factors determining a player’s NFL success.

Can we pick the right player, we’ll see:)

If we trade down from 7 I will be very disappointed. It screams the “ smartest guy in the room” decision.

Come April we are going to get a very good prospect and there will be great disagreement amongst us…even if we get MJH.
We should have taken an O-lineman.
We should have traded down.
We should have traded up to get MHJ.
At 7, just take the best player and get ready for our next pick.

If it were only that easy. :)

Bottom line - you have to pick the right players, regardless of where you draft.
We have busted at the top, middle, and late first round. So has every other team in the NFL.

The more I look at the draft and our gaps - the more I want 4 picks in the top 45 (vs 3). That means a small trade down out of the first pick if Harrison and both tackles are gone (for me).

We could leave round 2 with solid starters at OT, WR, DT, and CB.
We could even double up at Dline.

Furthers the notion that Odunze is very comfortable with physicality. If he tests well he could take the #2 WR spot.
These ranking are somewhat deceptive. It’s one thing to handle a single defender in an isolated area. It’s quite another to go over the middle and contend with 2 or more defenders. Guys like Coleman, FSU, are typically underrated.

Worst part about fans falling in love with prospects is that they’re in belief that another player, that plays the same position, are incapable of having a better career than them.
I sometimes fall into this. Still pretty confident Will A. will be much better than Ojulari--so far, so right. Granted, MHJ could have a worse career than the other top WRs. It's certainly possible. I don't think it's likely, but that's why I want him.

I'll be in very weird territory if he isn't an option because I usually land on who I want with our pick. And I won't have "the guy" ready to root for lol Weirdly enough, I had no idea what I wanted us to take when we drafted Kyler. IIRC I was hoping we'd draft someone else knowing we'd draft him.

I definitely fall in love with prospects, but I could see odunze having a better career. Heck, after Justin Jefferson I can say I could see any receiver being better. It’s just difficult to project such before it happens.

Eh, one was a top 3 pick & the other was a 2nd rounder. Should have been expected, lol. More understandable debate would be Will Anderson vs Tyree Wilson(Will obv much better, but both were top 10 picks).

For these WRs, it’ll mostly depend on the QBs & the scheme(bigger factor imo) on how their careers will pan out.

Agreed. On Tyree Wilson, I thought anyone would be insane to draft him in the Top 10.

And sometimes that’s just not enough for the position. His speed - will it translate to the nfl? His size does not. How often does a smart guy succeed at a position that’s a special blend of size and speed to be special?

I’m not saying bowers is a certain failure. I’m actually inetrigued by him. But I could also see him bust big time.
Honestly I don't want Bowers because I still want a different position with the Texans pick and I'm not taking him with the Cardinals pick.

McBride is a likely top five TE and Higgins has shown some potential himself. If I'm a GM, I'm taking a TE third round or later almost every year along with guards, ILBs, and Cs. Teams have drafted quite a few Pro Bowlers later at those positions. The same can't be said at the premium ones.

TBF - the argument has nothing to do with Ojulari.

It's Will Anderson vs Paris Johnson and whoever we pick with Houston's selection.

And just by himself I think PJ holding his own vs. WA so far.

PJ having a damn good rookie season and is poised to be our LTOTF.

That's a strange thought process because you have a much greater chance of picking the "right player" when you're selecting the more talented player. In this case, Harrison.
It's not perceived talent. He IS more talented than the other WRs. I agree with Stout, get the elite level talent players when you can.

Agree.

Paris played as good as DJ did his first season (he didn't play as a rookie) and think about the War Daddy's Paris had to go against this year.

His FLOOR is DJ.

I don't think you're understanding me. Last year is done and dusted, in the books. I'm talking about not trading down away from elite talent in THIS coming draft.

I thought the Cardinals could trade back to pick up some picks and draft Roy Williams instead of drafting Larry.

Yea better served just getting the generational WR talent. I think WRs are obvious talents. Its the QBs who can get ruined.

It also can be a detriment. If you're not explosive, in the NFL, many catches become contestable. So a guy with a high contestable number in college might be one of those guys that never gets separation in the NFL. That's not a trait I want anywhere near #4.

But if it's a bad QB or scheme, that's different. Not a one-off thing, just something to keep in mind. But if he has a high contest rate AND is shown to be athletically limited at the combine.... think hard about passing imo.

Thoughts?

I think the bears trade down to #2 or #3 and take MHJ. I just think it makes sense for them, and since they have another year before they have to pay Fields I think it's the route they go.

So assuming he's gone. I take Alt all day long. Plug him in a LT on day one and leave PJJ at Right tackle. Sign a very good veteran LG and let's go into next year having the best OLine we have ever had in AZ. I'm fine with that...in fact I'm pretty excited.

With the Texans pick, obviously it's wait and see. If there is a WR there that makes sense great. If not there should be a Dlineman...which we also desperately need. Depending on the draft there could even be a CB that makes sense.

If we're going to make a trade, I would prefer we move the Texans 3rd rounder and some of our later picks to get another starting quality DLineman...which there will be in round

All I know at this point is that between FA and the draft we need to add at least 5 defensive starters or significant contributors.
