I don’t about had to.. as a bad@$$ Dline can make bad corners look good, but when a player of this talent drops this far it’s worth the gamble.
The truth is despite all that we had invested into the CB position the last two years we were starting a middling journeyman at CB1 and an UDFA at CB2.

Melton didn't play well enough to unseat either guy, or he would have been starting.

SMB vs other teams #1 WR is bull****. It's target practice.

We had to make this pick.

I guess there's some disagreement on his 40 time. I keep seeing online he ran a 4.6 at his personal workout but Johnson and his agent said he did NOT run a 40 at the workout and they don't know where that time is coming from.

Todd McShay said it was reported he was running the 40 leading up to his pro day and it was in 4.58-4.62 range. I heard other places say he was in the low 4.5 range but I don't know when that was from. Regardless his athletic testing was pretty bad. I don't find his athletic testing too concerning since by all accounts he seems to be elite at what the Cards will want him to do. Injuries are the only thing making me hold my breath.

Wow, did not expect to pick him in the second without moving up. Seems like a great BPA in position of value and need. Monti's got some serious patience and belief in his board to wait until 47 to grab this guy.

Great get!
Excited to see what day 3 brings.

Steal of the draft. We get our #1CB in second round to go with Garret Williams and Melton.
  • Elite football IQ shows up in zone coverage - anticipates route combinations and jumps underneath throws with veteran savvy beyond his years.
That write up is what impresses me most about his game. Reminds me of Aeneas Williams how smart he was. Not the fastest CB but a field general.

I'm not concerned about his 40 time. He's an elite athlete.

The defensive MVP of the 2023 national championship game, the 6-2, 202-pound Johnson had 27 tackles last season along with four interceptions, with one returned for a touchdown, to go with eight pass breakups. Johnson had the fastest time this offseason on the team on Michigan’s reactive plyo stairs test at 2.27 seconds. He did the 3-cone drill in 6.57 seconds, displaying his ability to change directions and bend.
The best time during the past two years for corners at the last two NFL combines was 6.62, and the average time for corners at the 2024 combine was 6.88. Johnson’s 20-yard shuttle time was 4.05 seconds, which would’ve been third during the past two years in Indianapolis. (Former Michigan teammate Mike Sainristil did it in 4.01 seconds.) Johnson’s broad jump was 10-8 1/2.
“The grit that he trains with is unbelievable,” said Justin Tress, Michigan’s director of strength and conditioning. “Most DBs, they get the stigma; you have to convince them into doing stuff. Will is putting his nose into the fire and training with tight ends.”

No idea. Everything I read just says he was flagged for a knee issue. If I had to guess, he's got some looseness or bone on bone, maybe. He has no knee injuries in his college timeline, just a shoulder and turf toe.

I read somewhere that he had a knee scope a few years back.
