You mean it’s possible to hire assistants from other NFL teams, not just college? Weird.

No problem with hiring a position coach or even a coordinator from the college ranks.

However, NFL history is littered with the stories of college Head coaches who failed at the NFL level from Steve Spurrier to Kliff Kingsbury.

It has to be at least a one level promotion. They can’t take same level job; in this case an assistant anything.

Jaguars are hiring Cardinals pass game specialist Spencer Whipple as their new quarterbacks coach. Whipple - the son of former UMass HC and longtime NFL assistant Mark Whipple - spent the last six seasons in Arizona in multiple roles under Kliff Kingsbury and Jonathan Gannon.

Whipple played a big role in scouting Cardinals’ opponents and preparing game film. He’s the 4th assistant Jonathan Gannon will have to replace this offseason.

This might be addition by subtraction. Not saying he is a bad coach, but he is the only coach on offense that has been here all 6 years of Kyler and has been in charge of game planning the passing game for the last 3 seasons. Lets Drew have full offensive control now. Lets see if anything changes. He was also the assistant WR coach for 2 (2020,2021) of those 6 years.

Absolutely true. He was also the play caller when Kliff had COVID.

On May 10, 2022, he was promoted to co–pass game coordinator along with Cameron Turner.
Whipple stuck around when the new regime got to town, serving as the team’s pass game specialist — with an emphasis on wide receivers and tight ends — the past two seasons.

His present job also includes numerous responsibilities that don’t go unrecognized by Gannon, who broke down how Whipple helps offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.

Gannon said, “He’s really involved with Drew. He’s typically ahead of the week, so when Drew sits down and starts looking at … when the whole offensive staff sits down, he has a really good understanding of how they like to play, what their rules are, their structures, the breakdown of all the coverages, all those things. He’s a really good football coach. He’s coached different positions before so he knows how it all ties in together. Really good resource for Drew.” One detail, Gannon explained is, “He’s extremely intelligent, so he understands, ‘Hey, like they play their safeties like this.’ In practice, we play our safeties differently, so we’re gonna have to adjust that to make sure that they’re (scout team) giving them the right look if we’re on cards so we can say, ‘Play it like this because they don’t play like that.’ So he understands the intricacies of how different people play. I think that helps our guys to give the right looks in practice the way what they think they’re gonna see.”

He spoke to the media Saturday:

Q: As you go over this passing game over six weeks, where would you assess where it is and maybe some of the places you might be able to fix some things?

A: Well, I think any season, any passing game, any running game, any scheme you have, you’re always looking for ways to continue to improve it and really my job, the thing that I do, is try to help get ahead on each opponent for Drew. There’s a lot of things that coordinators got to deal with the day after the games. So I try to stay a week ahead and prep him on the next defense. Kind of give him some things that the coverages may give us issues with or not and what things to attack. So that’s kind of what I’m working on and the passing game, the running game, the scheme; it’s always each team. You’re always looking for ways to improve things to add, things of that nature through the course of the season.
