A tepid season of postseason success between the five schools represented is overshadowed by the young talent that showed promise and brings optimism for next year.
This is the Times-Review’s Boys Soccer All-Johnson County team.
The leading scorer among all nominees booted in 13 goals and five assists for the Spartans as he earned first-team All-District 8-5A honors. The All-Johnson County MVP is Centennial’s Hudson Hodges.
In the heart of the Yellow Jacket formation is Cleburne’s leading scorer and the All-Johnson County Offensive Player of the Year — Nabor Santana Jr.
The junior midfielder was the only other player in the double digits for goals with 10 and five assists as well.
The Joshua Owls allowed the least amount of goals in district play, with 22 in 14 games. Leading the back line for the team is the All-District Defensive MVP and the All-Johnson County Defensive Player of the Year — Anthony Ortiz.
Ortiz and the Joshua defense shut out their opponents in five of the last six district games, improving the Owls’ position in the standings.
As the only senior finding their way onto the superlative list, Ortiz locked down his half of the field and contributed two goals and one assists for the Owls.
In his first season with the Spartans, sophomore Matt Harkrider was a trusted utility player for Centennial. Holding down midfield or attacking up, Harkrider did it all for his team and earns the All-Johnson County Midfielder of the Year.
Sophomores excelled across District 8-5A, including in Cleburne. Claiming the All-District Defensive Newcomer of the Year, the All-Johnson County Newcomer of the Year is defensive midfielder Evan Estrada.
No other keeper came close to the number of saves obtained by the All-Johnson County Goalkeeper of the Year. At 172 saves and 21 goals allowed in one of the most difficult pre-district schedules of 4A, Alvarado’s Seth Young earns the honor.
“I’m ecstatic to see that high of a margin,” said Young. “it’s a testament to the hard work and training I put in everyday.”
As far as thinking about potentially hitting 200 saves, Young quoted his goalkeeper coach, Dejan Milosevic, saying the keeper should be the most bored player on the field.
“I will continue to train and prepare myself to be ready to do my job,” said Taylor. “But the ultimate goal is for the team to be successful.
As one of the most consistent teams in district play and the only bi-district champions among the five teams, the All-Johnson County Coach and Team of the Year awards go to William Walker and the Joshua Owls.
Walker and the boys finished the regular season on a 4-game winning streak to finish third in the standings. The Owls were the sole team that made an area round appearance after a 1-0 win over Arlington Heights.
First-team All-Johnson County selections — Cleburne’s Leandro Rivera-Huerta and Angel Rico; Alvarado’s Joshua Luna, Isaiah Sanchez and Jacob Sandoval; Godley’s Gerson Moreno and Noah Lopez; Joshua’s Garin Gotcher, Cayden Howard, Carson Kilcoin and Granger Quinn; Centennial’s Jack Miller, Aiden Sandoval and Ezekiel Schwartz.
Second-team All-Johnson County selections — Cleburne’s Jose Ortiz and Jacob Aguilar; Alvarado’s Willy Torres, Jonathan Garcia and Mario Martinez; Godley’s Nash Pannell, Austin Becker and Kevin Maldonado; Joshua’s Dotun Ogunkoya, Eli Einhaus, Ismael Robles and Israel Gutierrez; Centennial’s Angelo Schwart and Steven Trujillo.
