With the 2025 NFL draft almost here, we will be taking a position-by-position look at the current state of the Indianapolis Colts' roster.
Up next, let's take a look at the wide receiver position.
The Colts decided not to re-sign free agent Juwann Winfree, while the one free agency move made by Indianapolis at this position was re-signing Ashton Dulin to a two-year deal.
This was an expected move, given that Dulin has been a key special teams contributor. In 2024, Dulin played 295 special teams snaps and did so across five of the six different phases. Out of 200 eligible players, Dulin ranked 13th in PFF's special teams grade in 2024.
While on offense, Dulin provides depth; he's shown to be a willing blocker in the run game and can step in and fill a variety of roles if needed.
If we were to list the Colts' positions of need from first--being the biggest--to 11th, wide receiver would be at No. 11 in those rankings.
The Colts did not have a high producer at the receiver position last season, with no one eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark. However, with Michael Pittman, Alec Pierce, and Josh Downs, the Colts were the only team in football to have three receivers surpass 800 yards, and did so with inconsistent quarterback play.
While AD Mitchell has to be much more consistent in 2025, if a team's fourth receiver on the depth chart is an uber-talented second-year player, who had his ups and downs, but did show an impressive ability to create separation, well, that's a good spot to be in. Along with having Dulin and Anthony Gould as depth and special teams help.
Now, once you get to the latter portion of Day 3, positional need takes a back seat and teams are looking for prospects who have a trait or two that they want to bet on developing.
So, even with the receiver room positioned well, I guess you can never quite rule out an addition, which perhaps is magnified with Pierce entering the final year of his rookie deal and the need for a vertical presence within an offense an important one. However, this is a well put together room, I'm not anticipating an addition, outside of a UDFA to two.
