As I look at the upcoming draft I’m wondering what potential mistakes could the Cards make; a few spring to mind. The first is assuming the current acquisitions are sufficient to guarantee an winning pass rush. We saw the Eagles destroy the best team in the AFC with an overwhelming pass rush. If the Cards continue to focus on the rush and get a penetrating DT or another top Edge they can insure a rush that is overwhelming.

The second distraction the Cards must avoid is taking a speed receiver early. This might be useful if a dominant such receiver was in the draft pool. There isn’t one. So a receiver gambit will have to wait until later in the draft.

If White isn’t re-signed many see a glaring hole at LB. It certainly is a weak spot. Fortunately this defense is not based on LBs as the key. Adding Tomlinson up front gives the line an anchor it hasn’t had for decades. The strength of the pass rush also reduces the LB liability in the middle. They can reinforce the LBs in round 3 or 4 if they are not satisfied with their current personnel. Perhaps they will go with a two down LB rotating in a different player if a passing third down arises. There would be bigger errors than taking the Alabama LB in round one, but I don’t believe that is the optimum selection.

Another tough call is what to do at RT. Those I’ve communicated with believe Williams will be back to start the season. While not a long term solution with Beachum as backup the position is not hopeless. Re-signing Barton would be smart. I’m not opposed to taking a RT with the second pick. This is a fairly deep draft and the Cards have enough strength at the position to take a player that might need a season to develop fully. Of course Jones is still there, but he’s developing slowly if at all. There’s always the possibility Johnson would get injured and require Beachum to play on that side. If Williams is also out, like any team, the Cards would be stretched thin. If they pick an OT in 2, Ersery or Belton would be the likely options.

There’s a rumor of considering a CB. I guess this started because they brought in Samuel. I simply can’t picture this. I wouldn’t put any of them as the BPA and so many of those CB BPAs have blown up in the past. Few have become great players.

In the end Grant is my first choice. I also like Nolen or Harmon. The latter is likely if they trade back and go DT. There are 4 or 5 Edges that could be grabbed as pass rushing specialists to start their career. Umanmielen has been my favorite, but if you’re looking just at immediate impact, others could be considered.

I probably only have 9 guys who I consider at 16 if I am the Cardinals. Some of these players will almost certainly be gone, but here is the list by position.

Armand Membou
Will Campbell
Kenneth Grant
Mason Graham
Abdul Carter
Mike Green
Shemar Stewart
Travis Hunter
Will Johnson

Two players that I am undecided on are Walter Nolen and Mykel Williams. I get why you would take them, but I also understand there are reasons you wouldn't. (I think you can argue that Membou, Green and Stewart should be in this group as well, I just view their stuff a little differently)

I understand some Nolen character concerns but what worries you about Williams?

His bend and burst. I have watched games both this season and last where I feel he is slow off the ball and most of his pressures are from stunts. I can't find many reps where he beats his man around the edge and bends to the QB. Most of what I see is manufactured edges from stunts where he doesn't have to bend. Seems very linear from the tape.

It's isn't character stuff for Williams.

at #16 -- the Cards have the potential to turn a 2024 position deficit into a position of strength--

if its DT-- and the pick works -- suddenly Bilal Nichols and Justin Jones become quality depth

if its Edge-- and the pick works -- you have Sweat, #16, Browning and BJ Ojulari

Medium player. His best year was 2018 when they played a 4 man front. He was okay, but nothing special except maybe 2018.
So is Dalvin Tomlinson, bro. Tomlinson was allowed to leave the Giants, then the Vikes, and now the Browns traded him for cap space.

Tomlinson is a plus starter, but he's not Ted Washington.

Peters was a reliable vet who could stuff the run but that was it. Peters made $28M in his 13 year career that averaged around $2-3M per year.

Meanwhile Tomlinson has already made $53M in his career and that doesn't include the $30M that the Cardinals just signed him for over the next two years.

do we consider Calais an edge or a DT? he is the best defensive lineman the Cards have had in the last 20 years --- maybe since Dockett

I expect Tomlinson to be more impactful than Peters.
Based on what? Their career stats to date are almost identical.

I'm not sure what your point is here. Peters' prime was almost 10 years ago. We got a lot of excess value from his contract. We're probably buying the downside of Tomlinson's career but paying like we're getting him when he left the Vikes two years ago.

I consider him an IDL and not an edge. He can play 5-technique with is kind of between the OG and OT.
