Russell Wilson signing with New York checked a lot of boxes for the Giants' 2025 QB search—and it shed light on where the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2025 offseason plan of attack will need to go next. Here are three of the biggest takeaways from Wilson signing a one-year contract with the Giants.

Did Steelers not want to match Wilson's team-friendly deal?

Heading into the 2025 offseason, Wilson was projected to sign a contract near $30 to $35 million per year, potentially pricing himself off the Steel City's radar. However, as many are now aware, 'Mr. Unlimited' himself signed a cheap, team-friendly, $21 million contract with the New York Giants for one year—did the Pittsburgh Steelers seriously prefer a potentially more expensive, 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers over Wilson?

Retirement or Pittsburgh: Rodgers is down to final two options

While much of the discussion surrounding the Wilson-Giants deal has focused on the Pittsburgh Steelers losing leverage over Rodgers, everyone seems to be forgetting that Rodgers also lost his only other landing spot for 2025—excluding retirement. It was reported that the Minnesota Vikings had already shot down a Rodgers signing, and with the New York Giants following suit, if the four-time MVP wants to play in 2025, the Steel City is his only real shot.

Steelers more likely to draft first-round QB under Rodgers

As much as the Black and Gold faithful, including myself, would hate repeating the "Kenny Pickett mistake" by reaching for a first-round QB late in the 2025 NFL Draft, it makes far more sense to do so with Wilson signing elsewhere. Wilson, 36 years old, likely has at least three to four more years of starting-caliber QB play left in the tank. Rodgers, on the other hand, could be down to his final season in 2025, potentially making the decision to draft a QB with the 21st overall pick more appealing—especially if DTs Kenneth Grant or Walter Nolen have already been selected by then.
