The Philadelphia 76ers were able to come away with a 130-125 win over the Dallas Mavericks on the road on Sunday afternoon to begin a 6-game road trip. The win snapped a 3-game losing skid as it got them back in the win column, still 5 games back of the Chicago Bulls for the final play-in spot in the East.

The Sixers used a big third quarter on Sunday to build a double-digit lead before the Mavs pulled back to within one, but Philadelphia was able to close out Dallas thanks to the play of Quentin Grimes who finished with 28 points and six assists in his first game against his former team.

Guerschon Yabusele added 14 points and six rebounds, Jalen Hood-Schifino scored a career-high 19 points, Jeff Dowtin Jr. added 14 points, Oshae Brissett had 13, and Ricky Council IV added 13 and 10 rebounds while Justin Edwards added 10.

Here are the three biggest takeaways following the loss:

Edwards moving without the ball

It's a skill that isn't glorified or anything like that, but Edwards showed off an ability to move without the ball against the Mavericks. There were plenty of times when he was able to curl off screens and step into some open looks from the mid-range. That is a lost art in today's NBA and if Edwards can add this to his game, it can be an underrated addition to his offensive game. He already has the athleticism that will make him a valuable player in this league, but he continues to show off a high basketball IQ and a clear understanding of how to play this game at a high level. His performance against the Mavericks was even more proof of that.

Hood-Schifino finds his shot

Hood-Schifino was never billed as a shooter during his time in college at Indiana, nor has been a shooter in the league, but he sure did look like one against the Mavericks. He shot 5-for-9 from deep in Dallas on Sunday. When considering he entered the night just 2-for-19 from 3 in his NBA career, this was a breakout game for him. One has to wonder if this is a performance he can carry over to the future. He has the form on his jumper, but just hasn't been able to convert on those looks.

Grimes continues to make free agency case

There's still 15 games remaining in the 2024-25 season before free agency even becomes a talking point, but for Grimes, he continues to make a statement about how much money he should earn this summer. He will enter restricted free agency in June and will undoubtedly receive a big contract offer whether that is from the Sixers or somebody else. His ability to score off the dribble has been apparent since his acquisition at the deadline and he has been efficient with his offense. One has to wonder how much money he will get when the time comes.
