For the 24th consecutive year, the Burlington Free Press sports staff wore out the phone lines and filled up email boxes to find the best high school girls hockey players Vermont has to offer.
As always, trimming the list down to first and second teams of 12 total players, plus a cast of honorable mentions, is never easy. But at the end of the day it remains a subjective process, and one we undertake with great pride and care.
Congratulations to the 30 players listed below, headlined by Essex senior Taylor Senecal who earned The Free Press' Miss Hockey title for the 2024-2025 season.
****
Freshman, forward
• The player: Chatham Brouillette took the ice by storm as a freshman for the Comets. Brouillette, a defender her whole career until this season, moved to forward midway during the season and thrived. The freshman tallied 13 goals and eight assists tying teammate Kali Cushing as BFA's leading scorer this year. Brouillette also earned First Team honors from the Metro Division coaches.
• Coach Luke Cioffi on Brouillette: "She's a physical player...made the transition (to forward) well and is a total team player. She's all in on everything she does."
Senior, forward
• The player: Holley MacLellan finished up her hockey career in spectacular fashion scoring 30 goals and recording 10 assists on a deep and balanced roster. MacLellan completed her career with 180 points earning BFP all-state first team honors for the second consecutive season. The forward also served as a team captain this past winter.
• Coach Molly Beauregard on MacLellan: "When she goes up on the ice she always knows has her plan, knows what she's doing and is going with a purpose which is awesome. She's one of our smartest players on the ice and is very assertive."
Senior, forward
• The player: McKenna Raymond was key in Middlebury advancing to the D-II championship game for the first time since 2021. The Lake 'A' Division player of the year tallied 34 goals and 12 assists this past winter even with a strong supporting cast around her. The team fed off Raymond's energy and leadership. The senior has a powerful shot that opponents had trouble stopping making her a serious threat.
• Coach PJ Lalonde on Raymond: "She's a strong skater and she is great at protecting the puck. When she was really dialed in it was very difficult for other teams to pry the puck away from her. And she was good at finding open ice too. So if she didn't have the puck she was great at finding a passing lane."
Junior, defense
• The player: The Kingdom Blades entered this winter having lost a lot of talent to graduation and prep school. One of the players to step up was Gaby Griffith on defense. The junior was a captain this year and can do it all. Griffith has great stick work and shot that produced nine goals and 18 assists showcasing her ability to move up the ice from the backline.
• Coach Ed Guadreau on Griffith: "As you can see by the points she put up she knows how to create offense, but that mostly comes from being to pass the puck well. She's not a super fast skater, but is deceptive in her skating style and with her hands."
Senior, defense
• The player: Taylor Senecal returned to high school hockey after two years of playing elite hockey and excelled. This year's Miss Hockey scored 30 goals and tallied eight assists helping Essex win the D-I championship and was the Metro Division's player of the year. Senecal will continue her hockey career at Colgate University.
• Coach Jerry Gernander on Senecal: "She sees the ice incredibly well. She knows who's out there. She knows where they are, where they should be and where they're going to be. That's her biggest strong suit like just knowing the fundamentals of the game."
Senior, goalie
• The player: Leah Boyd has played high school hockey for five years and has turned into a stellar goalie for the SeaLakers. This year, the senior compiled a 1.04 goals against average and 98% save percentage. Having a senior goalie was crucial for team that had mostly freshmen and sophomore defenders as Boyd could clean up messes.
• Coach Molly Beauregardon Boyd: "She'll dominate the net completely and take (away) every shot especially whenever the shot is coming up. If she gets that first one she'll dive so hard just to get the other one."
Senior, forward
• The player: One of two seniors this year, Emma Bazin was instrumental in Hartford winning back-to-back D-II championships. The forward was a key player on the ice rarely getting sent to the penalty box. Her ability to remain on the ice and positioning herself well led to great production. Bazin tallied 20 goals and 23 assists finishing her career 164 points which are the second most in program history.
• Coach Jason Gramling on Bazin: "She knows where to be. She's patient, she doesn't force herself deep in the corner if she doesn't have to. If she sees someone else doing a lot of the work than she does a good job of getting in position to score."
Junior, forward
• The player: Isabel Guadreau, the coach's daughter, also helped fill the void for the Kingdom Blades. The junior relied on her speed to score 16 goals and her excellent passing ability to dish out 11 assists. Guadreau keeps her head up while controlling the puck allowing her to make crisp passes and helps open up the Kingdom Blades' offense.
• Coach Ed Guadreauon Guadreau: "I think she was very good on a breakaway... she doesn't have a blistering shot or anything like that. It's more about when she gets in tight to the goaltender."
Sophomore, forward
• The player: As a sophomore Peyton Laperle was Spaulding's leading scorer this season registering 35 points on 19 goals and 16 assists. In her sophomore season Laperle showcased her strength and more confidence on the ice as she earned first team honors from the Lake 'A' Division coaches. The forward is aggressive and gives all her effort on the ice
• Coach Dave Lawrence on Laperle: "When she gets going, uses her speed (she's hard to defend) and has good hands. She can stick handle and get around people. It's just that combination of speed, toughness and her compete level is what makes her really effective."
Senior, defense
• The player: For the first time in her career, Grace Lagerstedt switched from defense to offense midway through the season to try to spark the Raiders. Lagerstedt excelled playing forward finishing the year with 11 goals and 14 assists, but her ability to handle the puck cleanly makes her a valuable defender. The senior is also known for her leadership, having been a captain for three seasons which is rare.
• Coach Larry Smith on Lagerstedt: "She was very good at playing the open ice and looking for the open player in front of the net. So instead of taking that shot, she's going to look for the open player to get the goalie out of position and get that shot off."
Senior, defense
• The player: Fiona McHugh entered her senior season as the only upperclassman defender for the reigning D-I champions. Not only was McHugh a team captain but she was the captain of the team's defense that allowed just 1.18 goals per game. The senior is your typical "defenseman, defenseman" that doesn't record a lot of points. This year McHugh registered one goal and eight assists.
• Coach Molly Beauregard on McHugh: "Anytime she needed to get the puck out she would be the one that would do that which was huge. She also makes options on offense too."
Senior, goalie
• The player: Erin Jackson waited three years to earn her chance after sitting behind Makenna Montgomery. With Montgomery graduating, Jackson finally got the chance to play sizable minutes her senior year. Jackson made the most of her opportunity registering a 1.778 goals against average and a 91.1% save percentage as the Comets advanced to the D-I championship game.
• Coach Luke Cioffi on Jackson: "She would always be the person to make a key save or contribution on the ice as well as being the kid in the locker room who wants to set the right tone, but also is able to read the locker room. (She) knows the right things to say at the right time."
