There were earlier reports that at least one team was willing to greatly overpay for Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin in free agency.

Many assumed that the team was the receiver-needy New England Patriots, and according to NFL insider Albert Breer, that was reportedly the case. The Patriots were the "blank check" team desperately trying to sign the former All-Pro receiver.

Breer wrote:

"My understanding is that the blank check team was the Patriots, and it wasn’t the first time the Bucs had gotten such affirmation from a star receiver. Last year, in fact, Mike Evans agreed to a two-year, $41 million deal to stay in Tampa after the Rams upped the ante and went past where the Buccaneers were financially."

Godwin was well on his way toward a fourth straight 1,000-yard receiving season last year before he went down with a season-ending ankle injury. He recorded 50 receptions for 576 yards and five touchdowns in seven games.

Godwin would have been a major upgrade to the Patriots' wide receivers room. Now, the team will have to build through the draft or land on one of the few remaining free agent options.
