INDIANAPOLIS — Tyrese Haliburton says he and J.J. Redick still text from time to time, but it's not as easy to get ahold of him now that the former NBA sharpshooter is the Lakers' coach instead of a podcast host.

"He doesn't text back as much as he used to," Haliburton said.

Still, Redick and the Pacers All-Star point guard still maintain a strong relationship going back to Redick's days as the host of Old Man & the Three as Haliburton frequently came on as a guest. Usually his appearances were remote but he did appear in person last season and the chemistry between the two was clear.

When Redick took the Lakers job and the podcast rebranded as Young Man & the Three with a rotating cast of hosts who are current players, Haliburton hosted the first show, interviewing former President Barack Obama before the season and before the election.

The experience gave Haliburton a bigger stage and it also helped him connect to a mentor in the game.

"He's just really helped me a lot," Haliburton said. "To be able to use my voice for the right things and also share a little bit more about myself. I think his podcast gave people that platform. I think I did it once my rookie year and then he just fell in love with my basketball intelligence and he started having me on more often. We got to grow our relationship with from there. He's a guy I stay in contact with as much as I can. He's just a good friend and he's been a good soundboard for me, a good listening board for my career."

Redick said Haliburton is a player who's style has always impressed him.

"I think joy," Redick said when asked what most impressed him about Haliburton. "He plays with joy. He and I texted a few times last year and there were times when he kind of lost that joy.... He's at his best when he's playing with joy."

Haliburton is impressed by Redick in a similar way. The Lakers are 43-28 in his first year and sit in fifth in the Western Conference in a tight battle with Denver, Houston and Memphis for spots 2-5.

"I knew that eventually he would coach," Haliburton said. "He told me that was what he wanted to do at some point. Didn't know it would come this soon, but I'm not shocked as how good he's been. His basketball mind has always been a step ahead. He's always been a really intelligent guy."
