I don't think he fills the need for an edge pass rusher. He isn't going to be an OLB, he has no experience in coverage.

Again, what I think is that they are looking at him as a replacement for Dockett long term, and spelling Dockett short term.

If that's the case he is certainly a project. He needs to add strength and bulk up to replace DD. Just seems a little early for a project of that nature on a "win now" team.

Analysis:
Martin is a little under the radar among the draft-analyst-public. He has always been a tool-rich player with upside, but lacked the quality level of play week to week. Well I have seen Martin play five times in 2013, three of which in the past six weeks, and I am a believer he is going to be a quality starter in the NFL. He has all the size, length, speed, and skills required to play the 4-3 DE role at a high level. Martin makes a lot of things happen behind the line of scrimmage. He can cover a lot of ground in just a few steps. I’ve seen him completely take over games and I think it starting to really click with him. There are little technique aspects to work on with his pad level and hand work, but NFL coaching will elevate him to a high level. Don’t be surprised to see him taken in round one. I like that write up on him you posted. This guy could be a solid players and surprise us. Being able to stand up and play OLB and rush the QB will be a big adjustment for him.

martin is a true defensive end in 4-3 defense,but i think he can adapt to bowles scheme,he can play some role of shaughnessy
but with more athleticism.

North Carolina defensive end Kareem Martin was the team’s first third-round selection on Friday night and he fits that mold perfectly. The 6-foot-6, 272-pounder was a high jumper and hurdler in high school and showed off that athleticism at the NFL Scouting combine in February.

His broad jump of 10 feet, 9 inches led all down linemen and would have been second among linebackers, behind only Ohio State’s Ryan Shazier (10 feet, 10 inches). His vertical jump of 35 ½ inches was also tops among defensive linemen and he ran a 4.68-second 40-yard dash.

Could someone explain this pick to me? Too small and weak to play 34DE. Too big and slow to play 34 OLB. A traditional 43 DE on a 34 team...??????

from what I've read, the way I understand it is that the goal is for him to be the end opposite CC. He's a little shorter, but much more athletic. Because he doesn't quite have the frame, I don't think he'll be able to fill out to CC's size, but he can get close enough to where his athleticism makes up for it.

in the meantime though, given his athleticism, he can still play OLB for us. That may not be the ideal fit. But it's a good way to get him some time out there and experience against NFL teams as he is being molded into the DE he was picked to be. He won't see the field in any position other than OLB this season. I'm not sure that the trainers can put that much good weight on him by next year even. But I think they're pushing hard for that to have somebody that can replace DD should we not be able to come to terms with him restructuring (I don't see any way DD and Fitz can keep their 2015 salaries and we re-sign PP)
