Agreed. But starting 0-2 is going to be rough on that team, and if there is already distention between the players and the coaching staff....look out, it could get ugly quick.

This. I'm as happy as anyone that the 49ers lost last week but the press and other teams fans were dancing on the Cardinals grave after week one last year. Turned out to be a little premature, huh?

They could go 0-3.. They play KC in KC week 3.. If KC isnt just a fluke.. It could get real ugly in SF. And Imma love every minute of it..

They have a tough early schedule (other than Seattle) but then it gets pretty easy for most of the season. They will rebound. (edit: I hope not!!)

They could easily start 0-4. This week they get the Saints. Then it is at KC and at ATL.

If the Cards can somehow get off to a decent start, I have a hard time seeing Mike and Mike's prediction of the Niners wrapping up the division in October coming true.

Fixed it for you. I'm not buying that KC is for real. They looked pretty bad in their win. If it wasn't raining so hard I think they would have lost by a couple of scores.

They should have easily been able to go 2-2, but now they'll likely go 1-3.

I disagree. Sing is a nightmare of a coach, and he has a team that thinks they are world beaters without the talent to back it up. When things come crashing down, Sing isn't the kind of coach to hold it together. This has the potential to get ugly, especially since the thread of that team seems to be thin in the first place with the Davis/Crabtree issue and Alex Smith simply being not very good.

I think it's pretty much blown as it should be.

KC is very tough at home but agree that they are not a good team. If they get an early lead like against SD they could beat SF.

If they get off to a slow start, they've alredy shown they have enough off-the-field baggage that could become a distraction. Once the off-field snowball begins to roll, it will take care of their on-field results for us.

Not a mentally strong team. Not a mentally strong coach.

I think I'll wait more than one game before I kick dirt on their grave but it certainly doesn't look good when the coach is apparently outright lying about headsets not working. He may think he's covering for his OC and QB coach but that made Smith look like the culprit and that's why Smith contradicted what his coach said.

The Saints game will be interesting, if the game was in the dome in NO it would be a disaster with their communication issues, they're lucky it's at the Stick.

They have a real problem in that I've never bought that the team believes in Alex Smith, so when you have issues like that it's VERY important that it's clear to the team who was at fault, in this case apparently not Smith, so that they dont' lose even more faith in their QB. That's why I think Singletary's lie is going to hurt them.

Here's hoping to an even bigger implosion when the New Orleans juggernaut rolls into SF.

Lost in this was that Smith was a whiner under Nolan, and Smith became Singletary's guy last offseason. Reportedly Samurai Mike wanted to start Smith at the beginning of last year, but he wouldn't have the support of the locker room after Shaun Hill's strong finish in 2008. Now Hill's out and Smith is back in.

I just think that a rah rah coach is only as good as his W-L record. This team has so far managed to find themselves in a couple of semi-embarrassing losing streaks (a four-game streak in the middle of last year essentially ended any challenge at the division). Those cause a team to lose faith in the coaching staff.

I disagree with those who say that the 49ers lack talent. The talent is there. Gore, Staley, Clements, Franklin, Smith, Crabtree, Davis, Spencer, Spikes, and Goldson are all NFL-caliber players. It's that there doesn't seem to be a direction to that team. If I were looking for a head coach, I'd be looking to hire their DC--a guy whom Singletary kept.

What offense are they going to run? You can't complement a power run game (highlighting Gore) with a spread passing attack (highlighting Smith).

EDIT: Also, I'm not sure why we'd excoriate Juan Cole when he reports on the Cards but take him as God's-honest-truth when he reports on the Niners. A lot of his writing is certainly overheated and taken from the excellent local paper article from Sunday.

In some ways they may be experiencing what Whiz was afraid would happen here if he left Matt Leinart as his QB? that is that it's not just stats, the players have to believe in the QB, they have to be willing to go to war for him.

I've never quite believed that's the case with teh 49ers, I don't think they're laying down mind you, but I don't think they really believe in tight games Smith is going to make the play to turn the game. I think they believe he's more apt to screw up and I think that lack of belief in Smith is exacerbated when the coach essentially makes it seem like hey the headsets were cutting out he has to take over when that wasn't really what was happening.

Smith blew it on the delay of game, a veteran QB can't do that on the one yard line, but it should have never gotten to that point in the first place.

If the players don't believe in the QB, you risk losing the team and I think that's one big reason Matt is gone from the Cards.

They win last week if they were able to convert on one those 4th downs in the first half. That changed the momentum of the game IMO, cause SF dominated up until that point.

They used to be, but last year they only won 1 game there (and 3 on the road). That team is simply not what it used to be--even at home.

They're not there completely yet talent wise or experience wise at least but they're light years better than last year and they were in a lot of games last year.

Getting two SB caliber coordinators in the offseason should not be overlooked.

This. Well Put.

Agreed. I hate Jason Cole no matter what. Its like he LOVES to report on drama and gossip. Little girl IMO.
