It doesn't sound like the San Francisco 49ers will prioritize their offensive line in Round 1 of this year's NFL draft. They should look to bolster that group later in the draft, which is why it makes sense that Pro Football Focus pegged an offensive tackle as the best Day 3 fit for the 49ers.
PFF matched the 49ers with William & Mary offensive tackle Charles Grant in a list of the best team fits for players projected to go on Day 3 of the draft.
Grant is a fascinating player who has gained some notoriety in the national media in the lead up to the NFL draft. His level of competition at the FCS program brings his NFL readiness into question. It's a key reason he isn't projected to go until the third day of the three-day process. However, Grant's measurables make him a perfect fit for San Francisco given their needs on the offensive front.
The 49ers may be looking for a short-term swing tackle who could eventually jump in as the starting left tackle in the post-Trent Williams era. Grant may have a larger learning curve than most prospects when he makes the jump to the pros, but the situation in San Francisco gives him the developmental runway he'd require.
Grant is listed at 6-5, 311 pounds with 34 3/4-inch arms. All of those measurables check the requisite boxes for an OT prospect. He's also a tremendous athlete with movement skills that sometimes look more like a tight end than an offensive tackle. The 49ers could use Grant sparingly in his first season or two with the goal of having him ready to take on a starting job once Williams retires. That would be well worth the investment late on Day 2 or early on Day 3.
