Not to make a bunch of assumptions here, but if the Suns found themselves in possession of a trade exception slightly larger than $5.0m, what players do you think they might target?

I went over to hoopshype for a quick-and-dirty look at players making $4m-$5m who might be available for such an exception (and the inevitable pick). Here's what I came up with:

Code:
Player--team next year's salary remaining contract

Carlos Arroyo--Detroit $4.0m $12m/3yrs
Mike Dunleavy—Golden State $4.5m +$5.9m qualifying offer
David Wesley—Houston $4.9m expiring
Chucky Atkins—Lakers $4.5m expiring
Trenton Hassell—Minnesota $3.9m $23.3m/5yrs
Marc Jackson—Philadelphia $4.6m $9.4m/2yrs
Aaron Williams—Toronto $3.4m expiring
Matt Harpring—Utah $4.5m expiring

Arroyo seems like a real possibility. I think Marc Jackson would be a good fit, but that's just me.

Any ideas?

sign and trade for Earl Watson? Giving up a Suns future first rounder so that Memphis will do it.

Watson can't shoot. The Suns couldn't use him without drastically revising their offense.

I agree that S&Ts are a good place to look, though.

Sign and trade for Marko Jaric or Zaur Pachulia? Either of them plus Finley--especially at half the price--wouldn't be a bad exchange for JJ.

Thats true. I am just looking for some PG depth now since Joe is gone.

I would actually like them to step in and outbid Sac for Hart.

Am I the only person that remembers JJ from 2-3 years ago? He showed falshes and thats it then this year he finally became consistent.

We don't know if it was him actually growing up or just a function of the offense. I know emotions are a little tense at the moment but don't act like JJ is Jordan or something

I could easily see JJ wilting completely under the pressure of being "the man", or thriving. I don't think he'll do anything in between.

I think that he will thrive, but the Hawks won't win.

Actually, I think the suns should also be about 6 million under the cap, which is 49.5. There is no way I offer finley 6 million, so what can the suns do with that?

Shawn Marion $13,770,000
Steve Nash $9,625,000
Kurt Thomas $6,620,062
Boris Diaw $1,127,280
Jim Jackson $2,700,000
Amare Stoudemire $2,589,022
Leandrinho Barbosa$930,600
Dijon Thompson $400,000
Raja Bell $4,200,000
Scott Padgett $1,000,000
Filler $400,000
$43,361,964

Hmm...here's a question: can the Suns combine their new $5.0m exception with the $1.9m exception they got in the Voskuhl trade?

Code:
Derek Fisher--Golden State $5.3m ~$32m/5yrs
Juwon Howard--Houston $5.9m ~27m/4yrs
Scot Pollard--Indiana $6.3m expiring
Calvin Booth--Milwaukee $6.3m $13.2/2yrs
Joe Smith--Milwaukee $6.3m $13.2/2yrs
Hedo Turkoglu--Orlando $5.7m ~34m/5yrs
Tony Battie--Orlando $5.2m expiring
Nazr Mohammad--San Ant. $5.5m expiring

Sign Vlad Radmanovic! I don't know if they have enough money, but that would be a good pickup.

No we can't. You cannot combine exceptions. That also means that we cannot use the 25% + 100k in conjunction with the trade exception.

These lists of players don't exactly make me feel better about this trade exemption.

I completely agree. I look at most of these players and shudder. The sad thing is that we will be looking for a JJ like player (coined a poor man's JJ), when we could just have JJ. Yuck!

I'm unclear about whether the 25% variance relates to the trade exemption. Assuming it is $5 million, can the Suns deal for someone with a contract of $6.25 million?

Another thought: how about we get Utah to sign and trade Bell using this trade exception, then we'd have the whole MLE available. The problem is that quality bigs like Swift and Rahim are gone for exactly that amount!

I wouldn't consider Rahim a BIG

I had the same thought here. Great minds think alike.

Is it too late to revoke BC's Executive of the Year award? This is largely Sarver's fault (not extending and not matching), but Bryan Colangelo should have seen this coming.

No. The 25% +100k is an trade exception on its own. You can never combine exceptions, so the Suns cannot use it in conjunction with their 5 million one from the JJ deal.

Cool! With so many new posts, I didn't catch yours on that. But as you eloquently put it, Great minds think alike! Cheers!
