ASU, why give up our $2 mil Voskul exemption and a 2nd rounder for Payton, when we can get him at the vets min as it stands now. Boston IS NOT going to get him back. He won't go back to the Lakers becaus ehis stint with them wasn't what he likes (i.e. Triangle, Kobe, Phil), and Sacramento is not going to be a contender. So, the Suns are the only other team he mentioned as a possibility, therefore he should be a no brainer to sign for the Min.

Now, with that said, we could do the exemption plus Barbosa for Walker (S&T @ 5.8 mil for 2-4 years. Walker could flourish in our system, he can play the 3 behind Marion, the 4 behind Amare and KT. He spreads the floor with the 3 ball, he posts with the best of them, and he can board. Good looking out on that front though ASU. Boston might be more inclined to do a deal to a Western Conference team than to do a S&T with the Eastern Conference.

i thought that the Rockets and Heat were also looking into Payton. both of them only have the LLE ($1.8mil) to offer.....which i think both would offer because of their championship hopes. We on the other hand could up the offer a couple hundred thousand more as an added incentive.

I don't think the couple hundred thousand will matter to Payton. He has made huge contracts already. If he wants to come to the Suns he would do it for whatever they asked him to.

Just my opinion though.

Yes, however, he never mentioned them as candidates for his services. That's why I think that he may be a done deal already for the Suns. I think the Suns were showcasing Barbosa during the summer leagues, to try a taker for him (knowing Payton was there's). I don't know how much Barbosa showed though for other teams to be interested. I'd love to package him out for a legit Back-up point like Allen or Banks from Boston, or along with the exemption and or picks for a legit big man like Toine.

but IF he were considering going to another team, this would be an added incentive. the other reason why i might consider this is because it would bring in Payton without the need to use the LLE.

and IF other teams are interested in Finley such as both Houston, Miami, and Denver who can once again offer the LLE, the suns can counter with their own LLE.

correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think any of our exceptions can be combined with ANYTHING other than draft picks. Larry Coon says as much below:

For example, while a $2 million player can be traded for a $2.4 million player using the assigned player exception, a team with a $1 million trade exception cannot combine the two together and trade their $2 million player for a $3.4 million player.

------
so basically, we can trade a pick(s) + 1.9M exception for a guy with a salary UP TO $1.9M (Voskuhl exception).

in addition, we can trade a pick(s) + 1.9M exception for a guy with a salary UP TO $4.9M (JJ exception).

The picks could be heavily protected 2nd rounders. It doesn't matter. In addition, we could have another trade with one of our players for equity reasons.

For example, we can trade Barbosa for another team's crappy player making $1.2M ALONG WITH trading our $1.9M exception for a guy making $1.85M to the same team. This might be an equitable trade...

Look on the last page.

It is possible to pack players and the exception if the total equals exactly what you are getting back. In other words it will only realistically work with sign and trades where you can fit the contract appropiately.

It has to be exactly, unless the other team is under the cap and can absorb the difference.

The reason that trades don't have to be exactly matched when teams are over the cap is the 25% rule. When using a trade exception that rule cannot be used, so you have to be under the cap or the salaries have to be perfect.

That is why Coon makes it sound like you cannot combine players and exceptions. It is pretty hard to do, and only realistic in a sign and trade where you can fit the salary.

can you then break part of the exception? for instance: barbosa ($930k) and $4.55M out of the $4.9M exception for Eric Snow ($5.48M)? that way its exact

not that its a good trade or anything, just wondering if possible.
