The 26-year-old right-hander is recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery and isn't expected to rejoin the Reds until midseason at the earliest. He can serve the suspension from Major League Baseball while continuing his rehabilitation.

The thing is there really isn't a way around this. When you are on the DL you are considered on the active roster. It is the same way with a prospect who goes on the DL, if he was in the majors when he gets hurt then all his time on the DL counts towards his service time. Sucks but there isn't much they can do about it.
