Apr. 7—The Anchorage Daily News caught up with some of the best track and field athletes from around the state at the annual Big C Relays. The list includes a pentathlete with a wide range of interests and insights, a pair of Harry Potter fans whose house allegiances are on opposite ends of the spectrum, an elite distance runner with an affinity for Australian culture, and a star thrower who is influenced and inspired by the matriarchal figures in his life. There were also several impressive performances by top contenders and ascending talent alike.
Here's an introduction to six track and field athletes and the top performers from the Big C.
Tyler Drake, Bartlett
The Bartlett senior was the Division I boys state runner-up in triple jump and 110-meter hurdles in 2024. At the Big C Relays, he competed in the pentathlon and finished first in 110 hurdles with a new personal-best mark of 15.01. As a pentathlete, he finished first in the 300-meter hurdles with a new personal record (41.36), first in the high jump (5′ 6″), second in the 100-meter (11.69), fourth in the 800-meter (2:23.83) and fourth in the shot put (29′ 9″).
How did you get started in track and field? "I did it in sixth grade and middle school, and then COVID hit and then I started doing it in my freshman year. I did taekwondo growing up and was always able to jump doing that, so I might as well try jumps and stuff in high school, and it came kind of natural to me."
What is your favorite hype music genre, song or artist before an event? "I don't really listen to music before an events. I usually like to drown out the noise and keep to my self. I do like musical theater a bit. If I had to listen to something, I'd listen to musical theater stuff. I'm a big 'Hamilton' fan, that's definitely my favorite."
What is the best movie or series you've watched in the past year? "I was watching the show 'Shameless,' I like that a lot. My favorite character is definitely Fiona because you can tell she really cares about her family with how she has taken on that mother role but she is also hard on them too because she wants them to get out of that life."
Favorite fictional character of all time: "I'm a big Captain America fan. I like how he always wants to do the right thing. His whole story, becoming Captain America being the scrawny kid, but he had the biggest heart and when he was given the chance, he was really able to do some great things."
What's the best vacation you've ever been on or place you would like to go to? "I love going to Pittsburgh. That's where my family is and there's some great amusement parks there. My family is from Pittsburgh but I'm a (Cincinnati) Bengals fan."
Who is the most influential or inspirational person in your life? "(2024 Gatorade Player of the Year, Bartlett's) A'Lante Owens-Player. Having him practice with me every day helped me become a better jumper. He's just a guy I've looked up to when it comes to track and field. All the effort he puts in, I always try to mirror that work ethic ... He's great with academics, great with band and is just a great role model for me."
What is your favorite non-sports leisure activity? "I like building puzzles. I got a bunch of puzzles at my house and do them on my free time. Like 1,000-2,000 piece puzzles. I've got one done in a day before. It usually takes me three or four days to get those done. I like the ones that are a compilation of pictures like movie posters and postcards."
Jihsana Williams, Chugiak
The Chugiak sophomore is the reigning Division I state champion in the girls 100- and 200-meter races and was on the first-place 4x100-meter relay team. She helped lead the Mustangs to a first-place finish in the Friday's 4x100 relay in a time of 51.74 and Saturday's sprint medley relay in a time of 1:53.36.

"My goals I want to accomplish this year is hit the 60-mark for shot put and in discus, hit the 150 range," Alailefaleula said. "I want to defend the state title as the shot put champion and I also want to help with the youth at my school with track and field."
How did you get started in track and field? "I started in eighth grade at Begich middle school but I started taking it seriously my sophomore year. I got into it because of my older brother Niko, who was a thrower at Bartlett. I always try to follow his footsteps and be like him."
What is your favorite hype music genre, song or artist before an event? "Probably a little jazz music but I'm mostly into reggae music."
What is the best movie or series you've watched in the past year? "I'm not a big movies or TV show guy but the most recent movie I watched was 'Moana 2.' We went as a family with my little cousins and siblings."
Favorite fictional character of all time: "Hulk because being big and strong represents me."
What's the best vacation you've ever been on or place you would like to go to? "The best vacation I've ever been on was to Hawaii back in 2016. We went as a family back when we were little and I got to see all new things. It was my first time traveling so that was kind of cool."
Who is the most influential or inspirational person in your life? "My mom right now, and my great-grandma. My mom because she has been fighting through a couple things right now so she's representing me as an Alailefaleula. She's just being a fighter and I just want to be like her and carry it on. RIP Grandma Rose, but she was a role model for me growing up to be the bigger person that I am."
What is your favorite non-sports leisure activity? "Probably camping. I like camping out in the summer as much as possible because I'm always gone out of state. I like fishing, camping and all the outdoors stuff."
Nevaeh Watkins, Dimond
The Dimond sophomore is the reigning Division I state champion at girls 100-meter hurdles and high jump and was runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles. At the Big C Relays, she competed in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and the high jump. She came in first in the 100-meter hurdles with a new personal-best time of 15.30 and second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.94, and won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet.

Favorite fictional character of all time: "I like Severus Snape from Harry Potter because I'm a Slytherin."
What's the best vacation you've ever been on or place you would like to go to? "Nike Nationals this past summer. It was really fun and I had never been to Oregon, so that was really cool and I love the (University of) Oregon track."
Who is the most influential or inspirational person in your life? "My mom because she is very strong-willed and I admire the fact that she raised me by herself pretty much primarily after my dad passed. I know it's not easy for her, definitely being mom and dad at the same time and having to deal with me going to track, going to school and doing other activities."
What is your favorite non-sports leisure activity? "I like playing Fortnite or playing Sims."

Connor Hitchcock, Sitka
The Sitka senior pulled off one of the most shocking upsets of the first day of competition at the Big C Relays when he beat 2024 Division I cross country state champion and sophomore sensation Katahdin Staples, of Bettye Davis East, in the 3,200 race. Staples narrowly led for the majority of the race, until Hitchcock in the final lap found an extra gear and turned on the afterburners to be the first to cross the finish line, with a mark of 9:37.99.
"Those boys made it fast from the beginning, so it's truly thanks to them for the fast time," Hitchcock said. "I knew I had speed in me and I just trusted my training for the last 400 meters and it really paid off ... I was planning to go a little farther out and try to put the hurt on the other guys, but they were already doing that to themselves, so I just sat and kicked."
How did you get started in track and field? "Since fourth grade, but I started getting into it seriously when I was a freshman. All my friends were doing it and I just really liked the people in it."
What is your favorite hype music genre, song or artist before an event? "Lately, I've been listening to a lot of BigX and a mix of stuff."
What is the best movie or series you've watched in the past year? "I'd have to say 'Ted Lasso,' definitely my favorite."
Favorite fictional character of all time: "I'd have to say Neville (Longbottom) from Harry Potter."
What's the best vacation you've ever been on or place you would like to go to? "This spring break I actually went to Spain with my family, so that was pretty sweet. We did a lot of biking in a lot of hills. It was super fun and I got to see a lot of cool architecture."
Who is the most influential or inspirational person in your life? "In track, I'd definitely say my coaches, Shasta Smith and Jeremy Strong. They really built a great program at Sitka and are a big reason why I love track so much."
What is your favorite non-sports leisure activity? "I love to play pingpong just for fun. My dad and I play all the time. We have a couple of saw horses and a sheet of plywood and an extendable net that we use as a table, so it's a lot of fun."
Hannah Shaha, Chugiak
The Chugiak junior recorded a trio of top finishes at the 2024 state championships and helped the Mustangs girls 4x800 relay team win a state title. At the Big C Relays, she won the battle between the last two Gatorade Players of the Year for girls cross country in Friday's 3200 race by besting 2024 recipient and Wasilla sophomore Hailee Giacobbe. The two were neck-and-neck for most of the race after initially trailing Sitka's Marina Dill, but Shaha was able to create some separation in the second-to-last lap. She won with a time of 11:35.71 to Giacobbe's runner-up mark of 11:41.23. On Saturday, she set a new personal best in the 800-meter race with a third-place time of 2:20.56.
"That was part of my plan. Just kind of hang with the top girls for the first mile and then try to take it the second mile," Shaha said. "I know Hailee has a really strong finish so I knew that I had to work on my gap in the middle of the mile so I could keep it."
How did you get started in track and field? "I did cross country my freshman year. It was my first time running and then everyone was like, well you got to do track now if you did cross country, so my freshman year. Cross country was such a fun experience for me and I learned that I love to run and I was just excited to keep running and staying with my teammates."
What is your favorite hype music genre, song or artist before an event? "I have a playlist I like to listen to of just upbeat songs. I don't have a specific one."
What is the best movie or series you've watched in the past year? "I'm watching 'Gilmore Girls,' so that's the best TV show, but the best movie is 'Tangled.'"
Favorite fictional character of all time: "Maybe Rapunzel because she is a cool princess."
What's the best vacation you've ever been on or place you would like to go to? "I really want to go to Australia. I really like Australian accents and I really want to go and see all the wildlife and beaches."
Who is the most influential or inspirational person in your life? "My grandma. She really just set herself up for success, she raised my mom really well and made sure we stay strong together as a family. She was able to come up and support me at cross country state championships."
What is your favorite non-sports leisure activity? "I play the piano and really like doing that, and I also love to hang out with my friends and family."

At the Big C Relays, she competed in the 100-meter and a pair of relay races, finishing the individual race with a time of 12.77 in Saturday's finals. She helped lead the Mustangs to a first-place finish in the Friday's 4x100 relay in a time of 51.74 and Saturday's sprint medley relay in a time of 1:53.36.
How did you get started in track and field? "Since sixth grade. My brother was really good at it and I just wanted to start it to see if I could do it, and I'm here now."
What is your favorite hype music genre, song or artist before an event? "Kendrick Lamar. His whole (latest) album just hypes me up."
What is the best movie or series you've watched in the past year? "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
Favorite fictional character of all time: "Huey (Freeman) from 'The Boondocks.' His hair and just his attitude and the way he carries himself."
What's the best vacation you've ever been on or place you would like to go to? "I went Florida to Disney World last year. I like the rides."
Who is the most influential or inspirational person in your life? "My brother, my dad and my whole family."
What is your favorite non-sports leisure activity? "I work, sleep, go to school and hang out with friends, having sleepovers."
Deuce Alailefaleula, Bartlett
The Bartlett junior is reigning state champion in Division I shot put. At the Big C Relays, he competed in the "Lord of the Throwing Ring" field events. He won Friday's shot put competition with a season-best mark of 52′ 8.75″, which bested his state title-winning mark of 50′10.50″.
How did you get started in track and field? "Since seventh grade. My mom just wanted me to do a sport. She was like, 'Well it's almost spring and track season.' "
What is your favorite hype music genre, song or artist before an event? "I like rap. Kendrick Lamar but I also like a little bit of metal like Limp Bizkit. My current go-to song before an event is 'Girls, Girls, Girls' by Mötley Crüe."
What is the best movie or series you've watched in the past year? "I have to go with 'Law & Order SVU.' It's a staple for me."

Top performances
Dimond senior and UAA commit Sarah Dittman had an outstanding overall outing over the course of both days. The reigning Division I state champion in the girls long jump not only won that event and set a personal record with with a mark of 17′ 10.5″, but she also did the same in the 100-meter race when she bested Williams in a career-best time of 12.61. That time was less than a second behind Dimond senior Jarrett Jackson, who came in first at 1:58.81.
Sitka senior Clare Mullin, the reigning Division II state distance running triple crown winner, also set a personal record with a 58.36 in the 400-meter on Friday but still finished second to Chugiak's Alliyah Fields, who ran a personal-best 57.91. On Saturday, she flipped the script in the 800-meter by being the first to cross the finish line narrowly ahead of Fields with a time of 2:13.03. Mullin also helped lead the Wolves' distance medley relay team to a first-place finish.
