I'm happy with the way we finished the season, and I think it's a superb coaching job to keep everyone focused and believing after starting 1-6. I do, however, have some complaints, and I think it's a mistake to get emotional after how we finished the season, even if it may be natural.
I give all the credit to Whis for turning the season around, but I think everyone would do well to remember that he's also the reason we started 1-6. You can't give him credit for one without the other.
For the second year in a row Whisenhunt failed to find a solution at quarterback. All we're left with is more questions. Frankly, he didn't find a solution for our offensive line either. The same basic problems we had last year repeated themselves this year.
The main difference between this year and last year, IMO, is that he brought in Ray Horton--who saved his season. Without our D this year, our record would be truly disgusting. Great coaching move by him, and all the props in the world for the hiring--he would do well to keep his nose out of their meetings and schemings, because they're the only unit that worked and functioned this year.
I have hope for next year, the 2nd half of the season left a good feeling for me, but I still have nagging concerns that Whisenhunt has been unable to address for two years now. Our QB situation was as bad as it was last year with Derek Anderson. Every QB we put in there is afraid for his life, and the only reason we love on Skelton is because he's a warrior with no fear to stand in our system and try and make plays. I give any QB props who will stand back there and face what they face. As a thank you he got his knee drained and promptly fainted.
I want to repeat: in my opinion our QB's did nothing this year. Again. I give Whis credit for developing the rest of our team because defense and special teams will win you some games or at least keep you in games and they did that. But the fact that Alex-freaking-Smith outplayed all of our QB's tells me all I need to know.
