The Buffalo Bills added an interesting piece in Michael Hoecht during the NFL's 2025 free agency frenzy.

Hoecht, 27, signed a three-year deal in Buffalo. The defensive lineman brings a lot of interesting qualities to his new team.

After spending 2020-2024 with the Los Angeles Rams, Hoecht heads to the Bills and you'll want to get to know him better.

With that, here are seven things to know about the new Bills defensive end:

Suspended

It's hard to start elsewhere, so let's get it over with. Hoecht was one of two players that signed in Buffalo as a free agent who will be suspended by the NFL. Hoecht will miss the first six games of the 2025 season for violating the NFL's policy against performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).

Underdog 'coming home'

After going undrafted at the 2020 NFL draft out of Brown University, Hoecht was signed by the Los Angeles Rams. Eventually he not only made the team, but saw plenty of playing time.

Now Hoecht is "coming home" to Buffalo... he's a native of Oakville, Ontario.

However, Hoecht also spent time growing up in the United States. He split two years of high school in Canada and two in Ohio.

All-time versatility

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott has always liked his versatile players. Hoecht goes above any beyond that. He has played nearly everywhere on a defense is his career...

Superfreak.

Based on where you saw the news, new #Bills defender Michael Hoecht may have been listed as a DE, DT, or LB. Simply put, he has shown the ability to play at all three spots with his uncanny athleticism.#BillsMafiahttps://t.co/lTexR9leHq

Field goal blocker

This versatility that Hoecht has comes with an added bonus. Evidently, he can block field goals... very well. Just last season, Hoecht got in the way of three of them for the Rams:

One of the (many) cool things about new #Bills DT/DE/LB/Nickel Michael Hoecht (pronounced Hoyt) is that he blocked three kicks last year.

Super Bowl champ

Can't take it away from him: Hoecht won a Super Bowl in 2021 with the Rams. That was his rookie year and he made three starts.

At the time, Hoecht was teammates with former Bills pass rusher Von Miller when he won that title.

Did not let COVID stop him

Prior to entering the NFL, Hoecht got creative. The COVID-19 pandemic shut the world down in 2020, including the Pro Day at Brown.

In order to keep his NFL dreams alive, Hoecht told The Providence Journal that him and his roommates turned their college house into a "makeshift gym."

As described in the feature:

Hoecht and his roommates transformed their living room into a makeshift gym. They brought in a rack of weights for squats and a bench press. They used the old kegs for curls. Hoecht put rocks in a backpack and used ankle weights for lower-body workouts. They even used buckets filled with rice to get stronger.

Since Hoecht didn’t have a Pro Day, he created his own with the help of his friends, a tripod and an iPhone. The senior ran every drill — the 40-yard dash, the 3-cone, etc. They recorded him bench pressing and doing defensive lineman work. When a team from the Canadian Football League wanted to see Hoecht work out as a tight end, Logie threw him passes and they got that recorded as well.

Hoecht edited the videos in Apple’s iMovie application and emailed it to his agent, who sent it out to the 32 NFL teams.

A well-rounded student-athlete

Having attended Brown University, it's clear Hoecht is an intelligent guy. He didn't just get into his school because of his athletic ability.

Hoecht told the Rams' website that he was a tutor in college. Calculus, specifically.

"They paid. They paid money, and I was in college, and a little extra money in the pocket wasn't bad. And realistically, like, it's helpful for some of the guys to go through and be able to help them pass one of the harder classes that they have there at Brown, so if I can help out, it was good for me and good for them. Everybody kind of wins there."
