I haven't watched Hustle and Flow (and I never will), so take this with a grain of salt. It does not appear to me to be anything near worthy of a nomination, though.

Rent it - its actually quite a good movie.

But just because it's not bad, doesn't make it Oscar-worthy, right?

I don't know, how can either of us make that call having not seen it? It's not like it's Wedding Crashers or anything... I AM curious as to why you won't see it, or why you don't think it's Oscar-worthy.

Well, I really can't say it's not Oscar-worthy, having never seen it. I'm letting my bias get the best of me there. Why won't I see it? Doesn't sound interesting, isn't my kind of culture, and is, in fact, the kind of movie I usually despise. I feel no need to use my limited time to see it.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Philip Seymour Hoffman - CAPOTE
Terrence Howard - HUSTLE & FLOW SEEN IT
Heath Ledger - BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
Joaquin Phoenix - WALK THE LINE SEEN IT
David Strathairn - GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK SEEN IT

WHile I agree with Phoenix. I can certainly say that Howard and Strathairn are not better choices than Crowe. I would really like to see Capote.

Yer call - I was pretty skeptical myself when it was brought home.

But it turned out to be quite a nice surprise.

It is kinda funny that the two movies you haven't seen on the list are probably the two frontrunners... :trout:

It's not the movie that needs to be "Oscar worthy", it's the performance. Tombstone had an Oscar-worthy performance by Val Kilmer, but the film most definitely was not Oscar-worthy. So there is a difference.

The nomination of Howard isn't surprising when taking into consideration the hype it generated last summer. But it is surprising when taking into consideration the kind of film--which is Stout's beef with it, I suppose. Too much 8 Mile and Boyz N the Hood I suppose.

They may be. But teh fact that the ones I have mentioned and seen got the nod over Crowe stupifies me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with you on any of this--I loved Cinderella Man, personally, and I love Russell Crowe. And while there is a certain amount of educated people in the Academy, there could be several reasons why Crowe was not nominated.

1) The movie was released in the summer and didn't make that much money. (That said, only Hustle and Flow was released before the fall season, although it was almost 2 months AFTER Cinderella Man) To me, this is the main reason why he didn't get nominated.

2) Crowe had an episode earlier in the year where he through a telephone through a wall in the UK. The Academy would like to say they don't take that kind of stuff into consideration, but we know better.

I believe that Crowe's reputation as a jerk is definitely why he didn't get the nomination...which sucks if it is--I wish they could all leave personal feelings aside...

To be fair, he shouldn't be such a jerk like he was that night. That's not good for anyone.

I agree wholeheartedly. I used to be a much bigger fan of his, and the more I hear about him, the less I like him--and I hate it when that happens.

The only reason I didn't want Brokeback Mountain to win was because I am just tired of all the hype about it...and to me, it's getting all the hype because of the topic...

I'm pumped Crash won...it deserved it.

Brokeback was robbed - even supposedly "liberal" Hollywood is a bunch of frickin Homophobes who aren't comfortable with the two men in love.

That is simply not true. It's the Academy--which is still populated by the "old guard", the same men who ran the industry back in the McCarthy era. They're still not used to that kind of subject matter.

Also, you have to admit, there is a certain chance that Brokeback was overhyped. I mean, that's all we've seen for the last 4 months.

I haven't seen Brokeback yet, although my wife has. I have seen Crash.

I have no problem with Crash winning, it was a fantastic film and one I'd watch again. I can't say if Brokeback got jobbed until I see it, but I'm guessing it did not, from the feedback I received.

Now, I loved seeing Clooney get an Oscar, but I really wanted Jake to win...he's a great young actor.

True - the old guard is certainly that - OLD.

Overhyped? Possibly. But shouldn't the voters look through the hype?
