I guess there is some justice in the world. Gravity won every technical award but didn't win the big one, just as many on here thought it should go down. It was easily the most-seen best picture nominee, so I felt it was the front-runner.

I haven't seen 12 Years a Slave, but I guess I have to see it now. I just know I am going to be thoroughly depressed watching it, so it haven't been able to bring myself to see it or Dallas Buyers Club yet.

Thought the telecast was pretty good last night. They chose a safe host this year after the Mcfarlane Oscars. I thought that would make it lame. But Ellen did a decent job. The difference between her and a guy like Gervais is that she makes fun of the celebs to their face too, but she gets them to laugh along.

Ellen does a nice job, but you are right: She's a "safe" host.

I really enjoyed McFarlane's Oscars a year ago. It was a hoot. But then again, I'm more than a little warped. ;)

Ellen's shot at Liza Minelli was hardly tactful - but honest to God, I thought that WAS a male impersonator.

See Dallas Buyer's Club sometime. It's not as depressing as you might expect, it's full of humor and energy, though it has its sorrowful moments -- but it's about fighting to stay alive, not about dying. It's based on the real people who windmill-tilted against the big-Pharma/FDA lobby controlling/refusing access to experimental treatments in the early days of AIDS. Jared Lehto is ... well, stunning in every sense. McConnaghey is wild and his transformation from gay-bashing redneck druggie sex-addict to hero of a beaten-down gay community is done beautifully.
