Really surprised no Best Director nom for Martin McDonough. I think that pretty much solidifies Guillermo Del Toro and Shape of Water being tops this year.

You know it's a bad year for animated movies when The Boss Baby is nominated.

me too. I mean, the movie got best screenplay nod, THREE best/supporting actor noms, but the director wasn't responsible enough for all of that to get a nod? Weird.

agree with all the biggies, save Supporting Actress... thought Janey was chewing scenery the entire movie. Would have gone with Metcalf.

interesting footnote... 4 of the last 5 best directors have been from Mexico... Cuaron, Inarritu (twice) and Del Toro.

I was shocked that Baby Driver didn't win either sound category. The sound mixing and editing was superb and key to the story.

It was, but Dunkirk is a) from Christopher Nolan and b) a war movie. Hard to beat those two things if you're Edgar Wright and making a heist movie.

Is everything
Is it just me or did anyone else think that all of the nominations for Best Original Song sounded the same.

Oscar ratings plunge to a record low

https://apnews.com/7a1e09fef99144279e8f1815637c981d

Television viewers could barely stifle a yawn for Hollywood’s biggest night, with the Academy Awards plunging to a record-low viewership of 26.5 million people.

The Nielsen company said that’s a 20 percent drop from the 33 million who watched the 2017 show, which was also hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Oscar viewership is often tied to the box office muscle of the big nominees, and best picture winner “The Shape of Water” only grossed $57.4 million in the United States.

It’s the first time the Oscars have drawn fewer than 30 million people, in Nielsen records that go back to 1974. The Academy Awards are often the most-watched television program of the year after the Super Bowl, but this year’s Winter Olympics opening ceremony from Pyeongchang reached 27.8 million.

The previous low-water mark for the Oscars came in 2008, when “No Country For Old Men” won best picture.

Only four years ago the Oscar reached nearly 44 million viewers.

I have to admit. I had the Oscars on but the wife and I were only half paying attention. Honestly, the Oscars are so freaking bloated and boring.

Agreed. And a unique design. It had never been done before as far as I know.

it was very good, but Dunkirk was a movie almost completely based on audio/visual and was amazingly well done. Can't fault the Academy there.

The academy is still stuffy. Foreign films and period pieces have an advantage. Not that the Dunkirk sound track wasn't great. It absolutely was even though I was a tad disappointed in the film itself.

Yes, foreign films have an advantage. In the Best Foreign Film category. :)

You do have a point about period pieces. By my count, 6 of the Best Picture winners since 2010 were period pieces (although Spotlight could arguably not be considered a period piece).

Can't argue that either. I saw Dunkirk in IMAX and the audio was phenomenal.

Sorry I wasn't referencing a particular category. I meant in general there seems to be this love affair with foreign films in several categories in some years.
