Also, Dennis Villenueve was robbed. He should have won Best Director for Dune and wasn’t even nominated as it took home 6 other Oscars in technical categories. The director is the ultimate conductor of all of those and he created a movie with scope and grandeur unseen since the Lord Of The Rings series… and better, IMO.

No reason for a publicity stunt, as cheesebeef has pointed out. No way Will agrees to some stunt on the night when he's finally winning an Oscar for Best Actor. Looks to me like Chris thought Will was coming up to say something to him and then bam he got slapped. It's pathetic that Will cares more about another man joking about his wife than another man having sex with her.

Publicity stunts are usually done leading up to something. Not during. Slapping someone during a telecast isn't going to draw in more viewers. Not to mention it happened during the commercial break. Even if you light up social media the next day it does nothing for ratings. The LAPD thought it was serious enough to get involved. Will Smith tainted his crowning achievement, so it didn't benefit him. The idea it was staged is so dumb if you think about it logically.

Monumental night. Not talking about "the slap."

CODA becomes the first streaming service film to win Best Picture.

CODA is the first Sundance Film Festival movie to take home the Oscars best picture prize.

Also the first Oscar for a Deaf male actor (Troy Kutsor for CODA).
Apple winning best picture is huge for streaming services in general. It legitimizes the money being spent by streaming services to compete at the same level as the other studio efforts.

Especially when they beat out the favorite going in which was produced by another streaming service.

Uhh. What is every one on the planet including us doing right now? Eating it up and discussing. That's called PR. Think of all the money involved after the fact and the attention it's receiving. Even if it's only just a few more days. Thats money in the bank for the academy and ABC. It always comes down to the dollar bills at the end of the day IMO. Logically, it actually makes very good sense that it very well could have been staged for those reasons alone. JMO.

I mean people now think the world is flat or that there are 5g chips in a vaccine. Thinking a televised event is staged seems pretty mild in comparison regardless of how little sense it makes. Also not sure what people get out of thinking it's staged.

It allows righties to bash Hollywood as fake. newsflash from anyone working in the industry… DUH.

Even then, knowing how ginormous actors egos are, it’s beyond ridiculous to think that this is what Will Smith WANTS people to focus on today.

And? It doesn't benefit the show, Will Smith or Chris Rock at all. At the end of the day, you do stunts like these to draw people in. You can't draw someone in when it takes place during a commercial break. That is the dumbest thing ever. If you were really planning something it would have taken place DURING the telecast. Not when nobody was watching.

Ratings are king. Nobody tuned in because something happened during a commercial break. Also, nobody is sitting there thinking....you know....I am going to tune in next year because Will slapped Chris. LOL. Will Smith is the biggest loser in all this. Nobody is also thinking...you know.....I am going to hire Will now because of that slap. Thinking that Will Smith wants to draw attention from his achievement is also silly.

In fact, this is a bigger blemish on Hollywood overall and just gives more of the anti-Hollywood types more fodder. You think Hollywood wants more publicity calling them fakes?

There is no logic to this thought at all.

P.S. This is coming from someone who believes the vast majority of "reality tv" is scripted.

Fair enough. We have different perspectives of it is all.

Rock should have whipped out his phone and pretended to call the police to report he was attacked by someone in a MAGA hat.

It all seems fishy. At first Will thought the joke was funny and was smiling pretty much thru the whole "ordeal"? When Will came on stage Rock bent down to except the oncoming "slap" and seemed prepared for it. If you watch Will's wind up, it came from his side. Not the most powerful position to deliver a blow. I can see how people could think it was legit especially towards the end but to me too many variables scream setup.

The LAPD thought it was legit. So did many of the celebrities there off camera they came up to console the Smith's after it occurred. I mean that's a ton of conspiracy to buy into. If Will really wanted to hurt him he would have punched and not slapped. Dude has had enough boxing experience to lay Chris out. There is simply no plausible scenario to believe this was a setup unless it's the worst planned publicity stunt ever. Hey...let's plan this thing...but let's do it when we go to commercial break. Also, if you are Will Smith...you know I have this great idea.....let's pull attention away from my biggest acting moment in my career......it just makes sense.....are you with me Chris?!?!

The LAPD could still press charges against Mr. Smith, and I think they should. They have plenty of witnesses and videotape evidence.
I think Chris has to agree and it's hard to prosecute if he won't press charges which is likely why they had to get him to make a decision. Who knows? Maybe it can still happen.

I don't think it is necessary for a victim to press charges for police to make an arrest. Where is LVG when you need him! See below.

On occasion there are circumstances where police are called to chaotic scenes where tempers and stress are high. It’s not unusual that after the situation calms, the alleged victim regrets calling law enforcement. In these circumstances, you may wonder if you can still be arrested and face charges.

The short answer is, yes, the police can arrest you and refer the matter to the state for charges despite the alleged victim’s wishes.

When the police are called to the scene of a possible crime, they have the authority to make an arrest if they determine there is probable cause to do so. In criminal law, the probable cause standard for an arrest means the police have adequate reason to do so. For example, if police are called for a domestic disturbance and find upon arrival broken furniture, a hole in the wall, and a victim with visible injuries, there is probable cause to make an arrest – even if the victim is begging police not to do so.

No they can’t. No victim no crime. Unless there is some stupid city ordinance they have that says otherwise? Few exceptions like domestic violence.

Huh, interesting. Just because Rock doesn't want to press charges doesn't mean he is not a victim though. You'd think there is a benefit to society to hold an assaulter accountable, to try to deter further violence to the community.
