From what I can tell many nonsuperstars are getting max contracts... one of them being Marion.

Here are few questions I have....

Would you prefer to get rid of Marion if you could have his max contract back?

If Johnson becomes consistant he might become a max type player right? Even though he might not have super star status right?

McGrady is a superstar right? Even though some of you don't like his game very much.. most "experts" put him in the top five and he has been concentrated on because his team sucks so badly, Amare could take away some of his double teams...

So I guess the question is do we give JJ and Marion away for a guy who really deserves a max contract? I would think it would be worth it

That question seems vague....Do you mean get rid of Marion for nothing?? No I wouldnt. I think Marion is a nice player for our team so I wouldn't want to just get rid of him for the sake of a few bucks.

Yes Johnson might get paid max if we get a little more production and more consistant production.

Superstar status doesnt seem like a requirement to get paid the max. Not to a lot of NBA teams at least.

Depends on the deal. I'm assuming you're talking about McGrady on this so lets go with it for discussion...McGrady is indeed better than either Marion or JJ but McGrady is one starter while we'd be giving up two starters. We'd have to fill a hole as SG...thats one thing. Another thing...Marion is already a highly productive player and also JJ is giving out decent production. Now if JJ improves more will we regret this deal? People say "JJ could revert back to being inconsistant" but I'd say usually when players are early in their careers they will be up and down in their games more thant seasoned players. I think JJ is on he verge of being a borderline star (nobody denies he's talented) and if we give him more time that will come to pass. I mean do we want to give up two potential 20 ppg players that are still young and have long careers ahead of them for McGrady? Tmac brings interesting things to the table but downside is his back is questionable and frankly I question his attitude a little. Tmac is very talented so it makes it a hard call but I think Marion and JJ is too much to give up. Marion/JJ are doing well and like I said I think JJ will get better and better and we would regret giving him up. If we know for a fact we could get Kobe and he's not going to jail then I would pull the trigger and trade Marion/JJ...otherwise forget it.

Given JJ's inconsistencies and mild demeanor I think he would have to put up fantastic numbers and have a wonderful season to get maximum money from somebody. Of course there are teams like Atlanta, Utah, etc. with money to burn...

This summer will be useful in setting benchmarks. There are several third tier guys like Manu, Q Richardson, and Giricek on the market this summer. It they get massive contracts, then the Suns will be forced to pay similar money for JJ. On the other hand, if they are in the MLE range then I see little problem.

One of the odd things about JJ is that he may not have enough ego to be superstar, but that would also limit him going for the max. I was stunned when Jamaal Magloire resigned with New Orleans last year rather than waiting to become a free agent. He ended up getting roughly MLE money and I'd take him over Dampier any time.

Erick Dampier

Magoloire played with PJ Brown who got 8.6 rpg, so his stats are similar to that of Dampier except he is younger and has no history of injuries. His agent is an idiot. :stupid:

Now if JJ had the same agent...

Erick Dampier is clearly better than any center the Phoenix Suns have had, but I do think last season was a bit of a fluke. He was in his contract year. More importantly the Golden State Warriors traded away Antwawn Jamison and their other frontcourt player, Troy Murphy, spent the season on the IL.

Me too but Magloire got a 21 mil. / 3 year extension what is correct for his value. It's significantly more than the mid-level.

This is still very cheap for his numbers. Camby is looking for $60 million over 6 years and wasn't as productive.

Statistically they were pretty close:

Marcus Camby

Camby is the better shot blocker, but Magloire is much more able to stop opposing centers in the paint. Considering relative age, health, etc. I cannot see any way in the world that Camby is more valuable.
