With all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, I am wondering if people on this board aren't a little premature in their declarations of gloom and doom for the Franchise.
Given the situation that this new Coaching Staff, and our remodeled FO are dealing with, I am not at all disappointed in what has occurred on day two of Free Agency. Consider the following.
QB, Drew Stanton, (signed), Big, Strong Armed, Tough, should at least be a wash with soon departing Kevin Kolb, in that he is not fragile, and that he has played for BA in the past. Big money savings to boot.
RB, Mendenhall, (signed), head case or no, is a better power runner than Beanie Wells. He is quick, where Beanie wasn't, and yet strong, certainly where Beanie wasn't. Remember, Beanie was only strong when he used his stiff arm, and when the officials started sticking him with hands to the face, he had virtually nothing. He tripped over the white line, and was so top heavy that he fell anytime his feet or legs were touched. This is an upgrade for about the same cost.
S, Bell, (signed), while I don't know the cost of this contract, I do know that he is an adequate replacement for the recently departed Kerry Rhodes and his 6 million dollar salary for 2013. (Also remember that we have re-signed Rashad Johnson at safety, who will more than likely start in place of departed Adrian Wilson. True, Wilson was a Pro Bowler, but he was aging, and Johnson seemed to have turned the corner as his replacement during the later part of the 2012 season. Yet another money savings, and it is Johnson's time to shine.)
CB, Powers, (signed), whose 42 starts is a much better fit than the 11 starts for the departed Greg Toler at the corner opposite Patrick Peterson. Also consider that veteran CB Antwan Cason, is also scheduled in for a visit, and could work into this mix.
Pretty much locked up, but not yet signed, Josh Cribbs, Special Teamer and possible Wildcat QB is also in the house working on completion of his negotiations. He is slated to return kicks for the departed LaRod Stevens-Howling.
LB, Alexander, (signed), a special teamer and two down ILB, a run stuffing sure tackler who will enhance ST's and could help fill in for Paris Lenon. Still to come are scheduled visits by Linebackers Maualuga, and Brinkley. Either could be a replacement for aging Paris Lenon.
All this has been done in less time than it would have taken the human slug to explain what his plan was. THAT alone tells me that Keim, Licht, and Arians have their plan together, and are capable of identifying adequate replacements for players who have aged or who have un-tennable contracts, AND that they are more than capable of getting them in, getting them tested, and getting them signed. THIS is a far cry from what the Cardinals have been saddled with in previous free agencies.
To me, this is a wonderful start toward turning things around here in the desert. I am not at all disappointed in what these men have accomplished so far. It is clear that they are in agreement, and that they are working together to execute their plan. What a nice change.
