With all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, I am wondering if people on this board aren't a little premature in their declarations of gloom and doom for the Franchise.

Given the situation that this new Coaching Staff, and our remodeled FO are dealing with, I am not at all disappointed in what has occurred on day two of Free Agency. Consider the following.

QB, Drew Stanton, (signed), Big, Strong Armed, Tough, should at least be a wash with soon departing Kevin Kolb, in that he is not fragile, and that he has played for BA in the past. Big money savings to boot.

RB, Mendenhall, (signed), head case or no, is a better power runner than Beanie Wells. He is quick, where Beanie wasn't, and yet strong, certainly where Beanie wasn't. Remember, Beanie was only strong when he used his stiff arm, and when the officials started sticking him with hands to the face, he had virtually nothing. He tripped over the white line, and was so top heavy that he fell anytime his feet or legs were touched. This is an upgrade for about the same cost.

S, Bell, (signed), while I don't know the cost of this contract, I do know that he is an adequate replacement for the recently departed Kerry Rhodes and his 6 million dollar salary for 2013. (Also remember that we have re-signed Rashad Johnson at safety, who will more than likely start in place of departed Adrian Wilson. True, Wilson was a Pro Bowler, but he was aging, and Johnson seemed to have turned the corner as his replacement during the later part of the 2012 season. Yet another money savings, and it is Johnson's time to shine.)

CB, Powers, (signed), whose 42 starts is a much better fit than the 11 starts for the departed Greg Toler at the corner opposite Patrick Peterson. Also consider that veteran CB Antwan Cason, is also scheduled in for a visit, and could work into this mix.

Pretty much locked up, but not yet signed, Josh Cribbs, Special Teamer and possible Wildcat QB is also in the house working on completion of his negotiations. He is slated to return kicks for the departed LaRod Stevens-Howling.

LB, Alexander, (signed), a special teamer and two down ILB, a run stuffing sure tackler who will enhance ST's and could help fill in for Paris Lenon. Still to come are scheduled visits by Linebackers Maualuga, and Brinkley. Either could be a replacement for aging Paris Lenon.

All this has been done in less time than it would have taken the human slug to explain what his plan was. THAT alone tells me that Keim, Licht, and Arians have their plan together, and are capable of identifying adequate replacements for players who have aged or who have un-tennable contracts, AND that they are more than capable of getting them in, getting them tested, and getting them signed. THIS is a far cry from what the Cardinals have been saddled with in previous free agencies.

To me, this is a wonderful start toward turning things around here in the desert. I am not at all disappointed in what these men have accomplished so far. It is clear that they are in agreement, and that they are working together to execute their plan. What a nice change.

We need change after a terrible season. I prefer to wait and see what kind of team takes the field for our first game in September. The draft selections are more important for me than free agent signings.

Catfish, I think yo are spot on. Nice to feel that this staff and FO are active and seem to have a plan that will facilitate a long term direction. I'm not saying all these guys are long term solutions however given what is available out there I think they are doing their due diligence and are bringing in guys who can hold a spot while the team drafts and prepares younger guys to take over in a year or two. Some are longer term solutions.

Stabilize the team while building it through the draft. I am quite happy with the signing so far. Have no problems with the cuts they have made. I see Mendenhall and Cribbs as upgrades from what was on the roster. Powers and Bell as even replacements for Rhodes and Toler as neither of these guys wanted to remain a Cardinal so let them go now and move forward.

Early for the angst ?

I think a lot of this angst is too late.

Angst cause we won't be a good team?
When last year at this time it was GLARINGLY apparent our team would not be good, and for some time. Seriously, who thought that the offensive line we had last year was going to improve, or do anything ? The time for angst about how well this team will be should have started then.

Angst cause our defense has been dismantled ?
I can't fathom how I spent about a week talking about how good the defense was last year, and the VAST majority told me I was nutz, and it wasn't a top 10 defense, etc., etc., etc., ETC., ETC. Now that we cut a good amount of the players from that defense, NOW the defense is ruined ? NOW ? That great defense left town with Ray Horton. The time for angst about loosing the defense from last year should have started then.

Besides Kerry Rhodes being cut, there hasn't been much that has been surprising so far this offseason as far as I am concerned.

Funny that the fact we signed 5 players, 2 days into free agency is being glossed over. Rod "the snail" Graves would have NEVER been able to do that.

As for the moves themselves ? Eh, nothing surprising.

Agreed cardpa: I just don't see all the hate being spent on our new FO and Coaching Staff. If people want to hate, then hate on the people who put us in this mess, (Whiz and Co. and Rod Graves). Whiz because he totally misused the rosters he was given, and Graves because he left us nearly bankrupt with un-tennable contracts. When BA, Keim, Licht et.al. have been here 6 years, and have not made this a better team than Whiz and Graves left us, there will be plenty of time to hate on them. Right now, they deserve our support. This is not a two pony show, with one working against the other. These horses are a team, (with one harness), and a common draw bar. They are pulling together, and we have NOT seen that since the Birds have come to the desert.

One thing of note about Powers is that of his 42 games, he's started 42 games. Which means he must have won a training camp battle as a rookie. (unless he was on practice squad for a year or inactive)

That Kansas City defense has some serious pieces with Poe, Jackson, Houston, Hali, Johnson, Flowers, Robinson, Berry and now Smith.

Two bottom-dwelling teams make coaching changes, the Chiefs and the Cards. Compare their off seasons so far.

The Chiefs used FA to give them ultimate flexibility in the draft. The Cards are pretty much boxed in to drafting OL in the first round at this point.

The Chiefs added weapons to their D. The Cards subtracted.

Yes, it is too early to tell which road will lead to more wins in 2013, but I am thinking it feels more optimistic to be a Chiefs fan these days.

I don't see the Cards boxed in to anything. They are as free to take a kick ass pass rusher as they are an O-lineman. Both will be available at the #7 pick.

Um, duh??
People were kicking and screaming the moment BA signed about not having any $$, no plan for FA, etc, etc, etc. WAY before cuts and FA started.

No need to start this, IMO, until we get into preseason and see who they've brought in and how fast the team can get up to speed on BA's system/coaches.

Agreed. There is plenty of reason for concern but it was there long before the moves of the last few days.

There are two dimensions of free agency: (1) warm bodies and (2) talent.

By "warm bodies", I mean "lose a safety /add a safety." By "talent" I mean "lose a Pro Bowl safety/ add a decent but less sexy safety."

On Day One, I was freaking out because we were losing players at certain positions and not adding anyone (though we did re-sign Rashad).

Yesterday, we gained a lot of ground on the warm body deficit by signing 5 dudes. On paper, we may have lost a little ground in the talent dept., but it's a bit tricky to assess the talent-level of the good guys vs. the talent of the old guys - especially when you factor in upside.

For this reason, I'm more wiling to take more of "wait & see"" attitude toward the new guys (though not without a little trepidation).

Meanwhile, we've got two more "almost signed" FA's, one guy who left without a contract, another due to visit and another thought to be "considering" us.

It could be worse.

Please don't ever write that when discussing the Arizona Cardinals. :D

I will wait until we get to about game 10 in the regular season before I start saying the Chiefs totally out did us with regards to FA and the draft.

With the signing of CB, Antwan Cason, and DE, Matt Shaunessy today, we now have signed 9 FA's (including our own S, Rashad Johnson. This is stellar work by Keim, Licht, and Arians. They were meticulous in identifying players who could help us, and were decisive in handling them to get them signed. THAT is the way a FO and STAFF should work. We are still in the running for ST'r Cribbs. Nice job guys.
