Didn't we trade from 2 to 3 to take Wadsworth so the chargers could take Ryan Leaf, or am I not remembering that right? If so, that alone should keep it out of the top spot.

Go Farther back than 25 years and Clyde Duncan is my choice. Projected to go in th 4th or 5th round and George Boone took him in the 1st (#17). He was so horrible he only lasted 2 years (3 in NFL) and had only 4 receptions for 39 yards and 1TD. Not what you want from a #1 pick.

Yeah. Moved down from 2 to 3.

Also got San Diego's 2nd rounder and 1st rounder in 1999 (as well as other bits).

I don't agree at all that was by far the right pick to make at the time. " the next Bruce Smith" was what every expert was saying Wadsworth was indeed the real deal.

I don't count players who got hurt as bust. It's not like he chose to blow out both his knees. By all accounts he was a hard worker and a great guy his body just failed him. He has no control over that. But make no mistake that was the right pick to make at the time.

To me it's Wendell Bryant easy. You could just tell from the press conference he wasn't a football player

As was mentioned in the article, Wadsworth's career was marred by knee injuries, but was every bit as talented as advertised.

Tommy Knight, Wendell Bryant, and Levi Brown were players who were healthy but had no talent whatsoever.

ah yes, Tom "Crystal" Knight... object of my disdain for years. David Boston was a pick I was excited about, but we all know how that turned out.

That article links to an orginal article and take a look at the Raiders. Missing on two QB's that were reallllllllllly bad.

Oakland Raiders

JaMarcus Russell, QB, 1st, 2007

Epic stretch from 07 through 2010 for the Raiders. Darren McFadden was their best first-round pick! The worst is easy. JaMarcus Russell might be the worst first-round pick of all time for any team. He's certainly the Raiders worst of the past 25 years.

Notable:

Todd Marinovich, QB, 24th, 1991
Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, 7th, 2009
Rolando McClain, LB, 8th, 2010

Have to go with Wendell Bryant but Cooper may be a candidate if he doesn't turn it around.

And Eric Metcalf? Right?
Chargers

Traded Eric Metcalf, Patrick Sapp, 1998 first round pick (#3-Andre Wadsworth), 1998 second round pick (#33-Corey Chavous), 1999 first round pick (#8-David Boston) to Chargers for 1998 first round pick (#2-Ryan Leaf) on 1998-03-12

Best move Graves ever made, fleeced the Chargers!

I think that was Bob Ferguson not Graves.

The worst 1st round pick has to be Joe Namath!! Only because we let the Jets of the AFL swoop in and sign him. Pretty sure he was the only 1st round pick to ever choose the AFL over the NFL.

The wrioter is obviously using who we missed out on to make the pick as a barometer. Cards fans on this thread seem to be solely focusing on the players inability to contribute. Maybe wiffing on a player that caused us to miss someone better (ie: Woodson and Moss) weighed heavier for this writer. Either way, its a hindsight call if youre going to say Wadsworth, as at the time, it was a no brainer. Hindsight calls are easy. So yeah, this writer is lame.

The writer is a joke. Wadsworth isn't even in the running. LAME!

Yep...lazy writing! He was a beast before his devastating injury that's not a bust, that's bad luck. I'd say BJ and Bryant combo draft.

Wadsworth, Swann and Rice would have been special. Unfortunately...Injuries derailed Wads and Swann...and Rice decided Arizona was the armpit of the NFL. Shoulda coulda woulda...

I remember Duncan at training camp. I was a kid but remember he was really nice. Didn't realize how over his head he was. We also got Doug Dawson, Martin Bayless and Niko Noga in that draft. Noga use to lift after practice...beast!

Worst hands down....1970 Larry Stegent. Tore his knee out on first carry of first preseason game carried the ball approximately 10 times there after in 1971.

A trip down memory lane. Duncan is interesting as drafting him resulted in a major NFL rule change. Dollar Bill was so cheap he gave Boone a number and told him to find a player that would accept the number. Duncan was a likely round 2 selection and never showed he could play in the NFL. The NFL subsequently blocked all pre-draft negotiation except for the first pick. Picking Wadsworth as a bust just shows a lack of knowledge. His medicals made him look a little risky at the combine. He did have knee issues at FSU, but mostly played through them. He played well in his rookie year, despite missing all of training camp in one of the Cardinals' many salary disputes. Late in the season, maybe the NO game, the Cards were short DTs. They ask Wadsworth to move inside and he played a great game. However his knees seemed to really suffer. He finished the season including the playoffs, but never recovered. He wanted to play and had micro fracture surgery on both knees. In 2007 he attempted a comeback, but got cut.
I'll vote for Bryant as the worst number one. His mom seemed to make his decisions which is never a good thing in the NFL.
