When putting together a draft a team has to make a key decision; are we trying to win now or build a consistent competitor? In 2011 the Cards chose the latter tactic. While there wasn’t as much dancing, this was very much a Patriot-like draft.

The Cards correctly assessed that there was no “sure thing” at quarterback or OLB left when their first selection came. Instead they picked plug in players who would likely contribute immediately. In fact it wouldn’t shock me to see all 7 of them make the active roster and contribute in 2011. That’s fairly astonishing. The talent evaluators whose opinion I rely on the most, universally think this was an outstanding draft.

The Cards should be able to pick up a solid starting QB in the open market. They could also trade for one, but why give up picks if you don’t have to do so? They won’t be as fortunate with a pass rusher, but keep in mind that Schofield was rated a round one rusher before his injury. Add Acho on passing down and while it won’t be the best rush in the league, it will be improved. I also expect so O-line depth to be added; there’s plenty available.
With the right QB, this team can contend for the West. They are also putting pieces in place to contend for some time to come. Hopefully all the brass learned about depth from last season’s debacle. If so it may be a lost year well spent.

The only thing better then seeing post from Harry is a positive post from Harry.

The only question I have is the lesson on depth from last season only about the QB position or were there more.

Hey Harry, good assessment of our draft IMO. I too hope that our Staff and FO learned from that debacle. We would do well to keep that in mind going forward.

Good to "hear" from you, Harry!

As you mentioned most talent evaluators are rating the recent Cardinals' draft high; higher than many of the fans are...

A slight improvement, may result in a HUGE increase in production. The Cardinals were getting zero pass rush from their linebackers. With the ILB being just as bad as the OLB.

A year under Daryl Washington's belt will help the pass rush up the middle from the lineback position.

Even a slight increase in production and skill at the OLB'er position will produce a dramatic effect, IMO. If teams must respect the the OLB'ers then they are going to have issues across the board against the Cardinals.

When you need to keep your eye on Acho, Wilson, Washington, Schofield, Dockett, and Campbell. That is when the Cardinal pass rush is dangerous. You have 6 positions all with threats to sack the QB.

Add Peterson to that list.

I'm glad to hear you corroborate that, Harry. Nobody believes me when I say it :)

Round One-ish. He would've been the '10 draft version of Brooks Reed had he not gotten injured, methinks.

I'm a huge fan of Schofield and hope that he blossoms this season.

Harry, my assumption from your post is the Cards front office has started to get a clue....is this possible???

The story that they reportedly passed up a bundle of draft picks to select Patrick Peterson was most encouraging. Fitz kind of confirmed in the Michael Silver Yahoo story about the original Adrian Peterson-Levi Brown fiasco that Whis has learned from that mistake.

So yeah, maybe, just maybe, they are indeed getting a clue. :)

I want to see it on the field first. :D
